Academic Background: Current Position: For the MATE internship program, Lani writes proposals, recruits, evaluates, and coordinates participation for college students from across the country and works with research vessels and laboratories to find internship placements. She also coordinates two faculty development institutes each summer and maintains relationships to follow-up with and supports the faculty participants as they implement the new material into their classrooms. In addition, she maintains the faculty development and internship portions of the MATE web site and maintains the MATE AlumniWeb site. Related Experience: During her studies, Lani served as University Service Advocate for the Service Learning Institute at California State University at Monterey Bay. She was based at the Boys and Girls Clubs of Monterey County as a liaison, developing partnerships between the university and the community. She also recruited, trained, mentored and coordinated university student volunteers. In her role, she promoted social responsibly and social justice. Lani’s undergraduate research focused on weed abatement methods for organic agriculture through the USDA-Agriculture Research Service. After graduating, Lani spent a year and half in South Africa as an intern for EcoAfrica Environmental Consultants. At EcoAfrica she established a community based mapping team in a rural village. She created the curricula for the course and taught community members how to use computers, GPS and GIS. The project resulted in a series of maps now used to for tourism development and land management, as well as a qualified team of local mapping experts! After the mapping project, she was hired as a GIS consultant for the Freshwater Consulting Group based at the University of Cape Town in South Africa. She also spent some time traveling through Southern Africa. Personal Interests: Lani loves being outdoors and hiking and camping. She enjoys volunteering and currently is a volunteer for the Monterey Bay Sanctuary’s Urban Watch program, monitoring water quality in local storm drains. She is also on the Board of Directors for the Marina Farmer’s Market. She also loves to travel, especially in Latin America to discover new people, places and polish up her Spanish language skills.
