Internship Program Overview
One of the primary goals of the MATE Center is to develop educational resources and opportunities for students interested in marine science and technology. The MATE Center's regional and national employer surveys have made it clear that relevant work experience is one of the most important considerations in hiring new employees. To help prepare our students to be competitive and effective upon graduation, the MATE Center is working closely with employers in the marine fields to develop technically oriented internships that are closely tied to the academic and professional background of our students. The MATE Center has developed the UNOLS Internship Program (national) and a Regional Internship Program in Central California. MATE plans to expand its regional program in the near future.

If you are an employer interested in hosting an intern, MATE students have a wide variety of skills and backgrounds including computer programming, GIS, GPS, electronics, welding, carpentry, chemistry, water quality analysis, HAZMAT training, diving certification, HTML and web programming, biological and geological survey techniques, and statistics. Please complete an Internship Placement and Evaluation Forms or refer to MATE's Information for Employers. Or contact the MATE Internship Coordinator at (831) 646-4011.

Eligibility
All applicants must be over 18 years of age; U.S. citizen; appropriate visa status for foreigners; currently enrolled student in good academic standing. Preference will be given to students enrolled at MATE Partner institutions. Women and minorities are encouraged to apply.

Funding
Internships are both paid and unpaid and all room/board/travel expenses will be the responsibility of the intern unless otherwise noted.

MATE Student Survey
If you have not already done so, please take a moment to complete the MATE Student Information Survey. The information that we are collecting from students is valuable to us in our curriculum planning process. Your feedback will help to ensure that our educational resources will meet the needs of students interested in careers in the fields of marine technology and environmental science. We appreciate your time, and in return, we will do our best to keep you updated on opportunities in the marine and environmental fields.
