25 years responsible for Frank's Mobile Motor Medic Repair Service which fixes just about anything on land or in the water under the water that moves around using some form of power.

Personal Interests:
Cars, boats, diving, and fixing things. The ocean, science, computers, aquariums, and animals.

Jim Hall
Life Sciences Division/MATE

M.S. Information Systems, U.S. Naval Postgraduate School
- B.S. Mathematical Sciences, U.S. Coast Guard Academy

Related Experience: Jim served twenty-one years as an officer in the US Coast Guard, ending his career as a Commander in August 1998. While in the Coast Guard, he served as Commander of the Coast Guard Group in Monterey, California, and Commanding Officer of the Station Atlantic City in New Jersey. He was also Executive Officer of the Coast Guard's Operations Computer Center on Governor's Island, New York, and of the Coast Guard Base in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. During his last three years of active duty, Jim was assigned to Coast Guard Headquarters in Washington, DC, where he worked on training, performance, and workforce issues affecting over half the Coast Guard's technical workforce. He was also a founding member and first Secretary of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary's Advisory Council.

Personal Interests: Jim enjoys playing golf, coaching youth sports, exercising, and reading.

Fred Hochstaedter
Physical Sciences Division
Courses taught: Introductory Geology and Introductory Oceanography

Courses currently in development: Earth Catastrophes and Disasters, Environmental Perils in the Monterey Bay Area, Field Geology of the Monterey Bay Area, Map Making and Field Methods in the Earth and Marine Sciences, and Geologic Field Excursions in California and the American West.

Academic Background: B.S. 1984, Humboldt State University Ph.D. 1991, University of California, Santa Cruz.

Fred has taught at various institutions including UC Santa Cruz, San Francisco State University, and the University of South Florida.

Research Life: Studied the origin of volcanic rocks erupted at convergent margins. This research has brought Fred on marine expeditions to the western Pacific where he has used the submersible ALVIN as well as dredging to recover submarine volcanic rocks near the Mariana and Izu Islands. Field studies have also been made on land in Kamchatka. Fred has also completed geologic mapping projects in the Coast Ranges of northern California where oceanic rocks have been scraped up onto the North American continent.

Personal Life: In the Springtime, when not at MPC, Fred can be found in the Sierra Nevada mountains telemark skiing in the high mountain backcountry. Free your heel!

Deidre Sullivan

B.A. Geological Science, University of California, Santa Barbara
B.A. Aquatic Biology, University of California, Santa Barbara

Related Experience: (teaching areas, research experience) Deidre has actively been involved in science education for the past 15 years in a variety of settings from field-based primary and secondary education to college level instruction. She has extensive experience in geophysical exploration, the use of submersible vehicles, and the application of geographic information systems (GIS) to the marine environment. Deidre is an avid diver and has ten years of experience directing the diving program for Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI).

Personal Interests: Traveling, Diving, Hiking, Fossil Collecting, Swing Dancing, Underwater Tricycling (World Record Holder)
