Each summer the MATE Center hosts two professional development institutes for college, high school, and university faculty. The goals of MATE's Summer Institutes for Faculty Development are to: 1) create an awareness of ocean activities related to marine research, exploration, and industry; 2) highlight career opportunities associated with these activities; 3) promote the teaching of higher-level technical, problem-solving, critical thinking, communication, and teamwork skills; and 4) provide opportunities for educators to interact with employers - and vice versa. Institutes topics vary but have included submersible technology, marine technology, and the marine applications of GIS. The level of instruction also varies from year to year, ranging from introductory to advanced. Since 1999, 166 educators from 132 schools in 25 states have participated in MATE's Summer Institutes. Participants have gone on to create new courses, modify existing courses, and organize club activities focused on marine technology at their home institutions.
