MATE's 2000 Summer Institute for Faculty Development

MATE's 2000 Summer Institute for Faculty Development July 23- July 29, 2000 Teachers and Technology: ROVing the Oceans

The MATE Center's 2nd Annual Summer Institute was held in Monterey, California during the week of July 23rd. During the event, thirty energetic faculty members from universities, community colleges, and high schools across the country developed curriculum modules around the design, fabrication, and use of an ROV to solve real-world undersea problems. They also had the opportunity to talk to representatives from marine technology industries about what their companies are looking for in employees, as well as how industry can work with educational institutions to train and educate marine technical workers. And, of course, they built the ROVs that were put to the test in the Monterey Peninsula College pool on Friday afternoon, July 28th.

As participants gathered at the pool to carry out their "missions," sounds of laughter and excitement could be heard across the campus! (Read the Monterey County Herald article to learn more about this!) ROVs were flying through the water, maneuvering through an obstacle course, and trying to avoid the shark ROV. This may sound like child's play, but by the time participants left Monterey, they were armed with the skills, knowledge, and ability to teach their students how to build an ROV. With this knowledge in hand, participants have been able to help supply students with the skills needed to work in the marine technology field.
