MATE's 2002 Summer Institutes for Faculty Development

Teachers & Technology: Splashing into Success with ROVs
July 14 - July 20, 2002

In an attempt to address the needs of one of the rapidly expanding areas of marine technology, the MATE Center's first 4th Annual Summer Institute for Faculty Development focused on submersible technology, specifically Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs). The institute helped to improve the national marine technology workforce by providing community college, as well as high school and four-year university faculty with the knowledge, skills, and resource materials needed to implement curriculum focused on ROV design and building at their institutions. Faculty walked away with not only with this knowledge, but also with the abilities to build and fly a small-scale ROV.

Marine Science, Technology, and GIS
July 28 - August 3, 2002

The Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center hosted the second of two faculty workshops in Monterey, California July 28 to August 4, 2002 on topics related to the marine environment, marine technology, and the applications of GIS.This workshop facilitated a closer interaction between marine science and GIS faculty, thereby helping to increase the diversity of faculty and students exposed to GIS, marine technology, and marine technical careers. Faculty gained an awareness of career opportunities in the marine technical field, while increasing their understanding of technologies applied to ocean activities. Some of the many activities faculty were involved in, included:

  • a day trip on the Monterey Bay, demonstrating how marine GIS data can be collected using Side Scan Sonar equipment and a ROV
  • a geology field trip to help understand the rock formations in the Monterey Bay
  • designing and creating a GIS marine habitat map
