Description: The Job: The Otter Project runs a variety of campaigns and projects aimed at promoting sound, science based policy that will lead to the restoration of the California sea otter population. As an environmental organization with a highly specific focus we would like to develop a web page that explores the bigger – global - environmental issues (i.e. population issues, global warming, etc.) and solutions that link to the decline and recovery of sea otters. Duties will include outreach to members, potential members and interested parties through social networking sites to facilitate a dialogue on global environmental issues affecting sea otters and coastal eco-systems. We want to create a wiki-type dialogue on issues and use the ideas to create a web page linking us, our work, and sea otters, to the larger environmental community and issues. We have a desired outcome and lots of ideas, but the project allows for a great deal of flexibility and creativity. Initial Working Environment: Much of the internship will be web based, so there is a great deal of flexibility. Opportunity to work from home--probably a minimum of one day a week in the office. Overall schedule is flexible.
Requirements: Required Skills: -Internet research skills. -Ability to work independently. -Familiarity with a range of environmental issues. -Very good writing skills. Ability and experience writing for the web preferred. -Experience with social networking and web applications Preferred Skills: -Experience posting to and maintaining a Content Management System (CMS) website. -Advocacy skills and experience. -Nonprofit experience. -Candidate should have own laptop The Ideal Candidate: The ideal candidate will be environmentally and politically active and concerned. Candidate should be aware of a variety of environmental issues and movements, and able to identify connections. Knowledge of and ability to use web based tools is a must. The ideal candidate will be able to motivate people to discuss environmental issues through real or electronic forums, and synthesize information into a web based document. Creativity is a must!
