MATE Internship Program Profiles

 

Diana Wellman
MATE UNOLS Intern
Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Marine Operations
Supervisor: Richard Muller

Diana Wellman worked at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories as one of the MATE UNOLS Interns this summer. She assisted Richard Muller and Stewart Lamerdin with mobilization and demobilization of cruises, developed a computerized database of all shared use oceanographic equipment, and sailed as the assistant to the Marine Technician on the R/V John Martin and the R/V Point Sur. In Diana's words, "I have been delighted with the learning and 'on the job' training I have received during my internship with Moss Landing Marine Laboratories, Operation Division. I've known for some time I wanted to work with the ocean and I knew I liked working onboard boats and ships, but I never had the chance to experience it first hand. MATE has given me that chance." Diana worked hard during her internship, and received an outstanding evaluation from her supervisor.

Howatt King
Fisheries Research Technician
California Department of Fish and Game
Supervisor: David VenTresca

Howatt King was an intern with the California Department of Fish and Game, working for David Ven Tresca. Howatt was responsible for sampling fish catches from sport fisherman at the Monterey Coast Guard ramp. Howatt was responsible for identifying, recording, and entering data from fish catches into a database which the California Department of Fish and Game will now use to aid them in near-shore fishery management. Howatt also learned how valuable his communication, organization, and professional skills were, which helped him to excel in this position. Howatt stated that "working for the California Department of Fish and Game has proved to be a thoroughly rewarding experience." Due to Howatt's abilities, David stated that he was "very impressed with the overall performance of Howatt" and has now hired Howatt as an entry level employee.

Ernesto Pacleb
Lab Assistant
Granite Canyon Marine Pollution Lab
Supervisor: Bryn Phillips

At the Marine Pollution Studies Laboratory at Granite Canyon, Ernesto Pacleb worked in the laboratory preparing and conducting sediment toxicity tests. As a result of this internship, Ernesto would now like to develop his capstone project based on skills that he learned at Granite Canyon. Ernesto wrote about his internship stating that "[it] gave me a terrific opportunity to pursue many career opportunities involved with environmental toxicology." Bryn Phillips, Ernesto's supervisor, stated that "he was a pleasure to work with and [I] was very satisfied with his overall performance."
