The Programs Technician for Marine Sciences supports all day-to-day field-based education, research, and outreach/service functions for all of UNE's marine programs. The Programs Technician provides facilities and field operational support to all marine faculty, staff, students, scientists, and guest end-users of marine programs at UNE. The Programs Technician for Marine Sciences supports all land- and vessel-based science initiatives and operations via personnel coordination, assistance with shared equipment and resources, and provides all programmatic and infrastructure assistance to address the seasonally shifting, 24/7/365 needs of all MSC facility, boating, vehicle, and marine end-users. Responsibilities Provides support to all vessel, dock, and field operations including but not limited to operating vessels, basic preventative maintenance and troubleshooting, dock installation, removal, maintenance, sensor systems, and maintaining proper records. Trains and evaluates faculty, staff and student vessel operators during field operations and enforces boating safety protocols. Provides daily land-based facility support to all end-users requiring arrangements, oversight of facility vehicles and trailers, including field trips local and remote. Provides building access which includes lock programming and key management. Takes daily responsibility for multi-tasking and shifting priorities when needed to meet timelines and seasonal demands. Assists in student, faculty, and scientist research programs in terms of facilities, operations, equipment, vessels and vehicles, including their cleaning and maintenance; also including land-based and remote island laboratory and field systems, and general space organization and maintenance. Assists UNE ocean observing and operational professionals and students with the deployment, maintenance, organization, preparation, cleaning, maintenance, and operation of oceanographic instrumentation, sampling equipment, and computers for data and sample acquisition. Develops innovations in academic and research programs and fabricates to support faculty, student, and research scientist needs in their research and education programs. Provides administrative support to students and faculty as requested for research and education missions. Assists with all laboratory and seawater system maintenance and cleaning. Communicates regularly with the Facility Technician for Marine Sciences, Marine Sciences Laboratory Coordinator, SEAFISH Program Coordinator, and the MSC Water Quality Technician, to stay informed of seawater system status and works to ensure 24/7/365 seawater system coverage during planned and incidental absences from work. Provides support for other critical marine animal life support systems at the request of the Assistant Director for Marine Sciences. Understands and complies with MSDS and HAZCOM procedures and policies as part of UNE's comprehensive OSHA compliance program. Understands and complies with the Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. Successfully completes DOT training with 90 days of the hire date. Understands and complies with OSHA's blood borne pathogen standard (29 CFR 1910.1030) and chapter 8 of the University of New England safety manual. Understands and complies with OSHA's requirements (29 CFR 1910) for personal protective equipment (PPE) as defined by the university's chemical hygiene officers, the environmental health and safety coordinator (EHSC), the supervisor and chapter 17 of the University of New England safety manual Completes University sexual harassment training within 30 days of the date of hire. Understand and comply with the University of New England Safety Manual. Performs all other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in marine science, oceanography, biology, or related field plus 1 to three years each of relevant experience in: research or marine facility support; proven vessel operations in river, near shore and off shore environments or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired. USCG OUPV endorsement (required) and capable of earning a Master's license within one year of hire, or 25-ton USCG Master's license (desirable) Proven experience with boat handling, maintenance, and trailering Exhibits high level of responsibility and field safety-consciousness with University resources Proven experience as crew leader aboard vessel Experience with one or more: mechanics, electronics, oceanographic equipment, aquatic animal life support systems, and/or general fabrication Some trade, technical, and/or mechanical aptitude Physically capable of lifting 50lbs, willing to perform significant physical activity with regular exposure to inclement weather on land and at sea. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and work efficiently Ability to prioritize, coordinate, and perform multiple tasks Strong interpersonal skills to interact with facility end-users and research teams Advanced computer literacy Current CPR and First Aid administration certifications; instructor credentials desirable. Must possess a valid state driver's license
