Description:
- To begin August 2015, pending availability of funds and actual staffing requirements. Temporary with the possibility of renewal. Renewal of appointment contingent on satisfactory performance and availability of funds. Position may be converted from 9 to 11 months or 11 to 9 months based on operational needs.
- Under supervision, teach a variety of marine science courses, including marine and biological science courses and labs.
- Develop curriculum and align courses to meet student needs and college objectives.
- Improve and maintain laboratory facilities.
- Prepare and revise student learning outcomes and syllabi.
- Plan, organize, and carry out instructional and non-instructional assignments independently and collaboratively with other faculty and staff.
- Continually assess course and program student-learning objectives, and prepare regular reports on assessment activities.
- Maintain office hours as determined by teaching schedule.
- Counsel students.
- Identify students’ learning needs, including needs of underprepared students, and implement effective teaching strategies.
- Work collaboratively with other faculty members to integrate science in other related subjects.
- Work under the guidance of colleagues to develop an understanding of student needs, and advise students for their success in the program.
- Serve as faculty mentor to science students.
- Perform course assessment as well as assisting in program and institution level assessment.
- Develop and maintain a personal professional development program.
- Work with the Kaua‘i Department of Education and community; form other partnerships to improve science education and facilitate student opportunities and success.
- Participate in student recruitment activities.
- Maintain subject matter currency and be willing to continually update courses to keep up with college and student needs.
- Participate in division, campus, and system-wide committees.
- Evening and/or Saturday classes may be assigned as part of the regular workload.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:
- (a) Master’s degree in marine biology; OR
- (b) Master’s degree in marine science or oceanography with 18 credits of coursework (at least 9 of which are at the graduate level) in biological science; OR
- (c) Master's degree in a biology, ecology, zoology, or environmental science with 18 credits of coursework (at least 9 of which are at the graduate level) in marine biology.
- Educational or experiential background above minimum qualifications, specifically more extensive course work in, or experience with, marine biology or biological oceanography.
- Demonstrated ability to equip, maintain, and productively utilize a wet lab.
- Research or field experience (individual or team) focused on marine species.
- Experience in teaching marine biology or biological oceanography to college science majors.
- Experience in teaching oceanography, biology, or marine biology to college non-science majors, especially at a community college.
- Experience and willingness to build a successful academic program in marine science that meets students’ needs and college objectives.
- Experience in science-related projects and grants, including projects involving science in the community.
- Successful multi-cultural teaching experience.
- Demonstrated success serving as a mentor, advisor, or team leader.
- Have supportive attitude toward student learning and be able to create a nurturing classroom environment for students of diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Ability to employ writing assignments and critical thinking skill development as part of students’ classroom learning activities.
- Ability to function autonomously and as a member of a team.
- Willingness to instruct via the various technological media available to the college, including distance learning.
