The Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium (LUMCON) is accepting applications for the position of Marine Technician in support of oceanographic research aboard the 116 ft research vessel Pelican and the 135 ft R/V Point Sur. The R/V Pelican is a regional class vessel in the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System (UNOLS) and Point Sur is a former UNOLS vessel owned by the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) and operated by LUMCON.
Requirements:
An associate or bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, oceanography, marine science, or related discipline is desirable. Relevant experience can replace degree. Familiarity with standard oceanographic instrumentation, associated data acquisition and software is preferred: for example, Teledyne-RD Instruments Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers, Seabird Electronic CTDs and sensor arrays, shipboard computer networks, underway data acquisition systems, over-the-side data acquisition packages, winch monitoring systems and other data gathering instrumentation and software. The Marine Technician will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of permanent and transitory shared-use equipment and computer facilities. They will act as a system administrator for the ship's computer network and Satellite based internet services. Act as liaison between scientists and the ship's crew and instruct various personnel concerning the proper use of equipment. Opportunities will be provided for training in appropriate technical fields. Both entry level and senior personnel are encouraged to apply. Salary is commensurate with experience. Applicant must be willing and have the ability to spend up to 120 days per year at sea, perform normal duties onboard an ocean-going ship, ascend and descend ladders, able to lift/carry/ move moderately heavy equipment, to work aloft and in confined spaces and work odd and extended hours.
