Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Joint Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (JIMAR), located at the University of Hawaii at Manoa in Honolulu, Hawaii. Requirements:
DUTIES: Develops, supports, and maintains, University of Hawaii Data Acquisition System (UHDAS) acquisition and processing software and UHDAS installation procedures. Analyzes ocean current profile and ancillary sensor data sets to evaluate instrumentation and software performance and to develop processing algorithms. Collaborates with other researchers in the analysis of oceanographic observations. Develops and maintains Open Source software and documentation for data analysis and visualization, with emphasis on UHDAS and related packages. Educates scientists about Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) data and using UHDAS at sea. Manages, installs, maintains, supports and upgrades UHDAS on major oceanographic research ships operated by Universities, the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and other organizations. Promotes the acquisition and scientific application of high-quality ADCP data in the worldwide research fleet. Analyzes and monitors status of data acquisition systems on ships via automated daily status reports.
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: PhD Degree from an accredited college or university in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Ocean Engineering or related field. (A Master’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Physical Oceanography, Meteorology, Ocean Engineering or related field with three to five (3-5) years of experience which includes the following: operation and troubleshooting of field instrumentation and data acquisition systems; troubleshooting computer systems (program and system level) and hardware (PC/Windows, UNIX/Linux); analysis of large observational data sets; and scientific programming in Python may substitute for PhD Degree). EXPERIENCE: One to three (1- 3) years of work experience with scientific programming in Python involving ipython, numpy, matplotlib, and netCDF4, and used in the analysis of large data arrays. Experience developing, maintaining, and supporting open source software in a development group of three (3) or more people. Experience which includes the following: operation and troubleshooting of field instrumentation and data acquisition systems; troubleshooting computer systems (program and system level) and hardware (PC/Windows, UNIX/Linux); analysis of large observational data sets. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Strong knowledge of modern Python scientific programming techniques and libraries. Strong knowledge of Open Source development (revision control, code review and testing), and basic Computer Science. Strong knowledge of linear algebra-based data analysis techniques including correlation, spectral analysis, multiple linear regression, empirical orthogonal functions, and the like. Working knowledge of navigation fundamentals and instruments. Working knowledge of software installation methods on Mac, Linux, and Windows. Working knowledge of HTML and web programming. Working knowledge of Python graphical user interface toolkits such as tkinter and pyqt. Working knowledge of Bash terminal interface and primary commands on Mac and Linux. Demonstrated ability to write scientific data modeling and/or analysis programs in Python using Numpy and Matplotlib. Able to write well-structured, well-documented, reusable code, compatible with existing code base. Able to write high-quality technical documents suitable for oceanographic technicians and scientists. Ability to contribute to maintenance and development of an existing code base. Must have good verbal and written communication skills in English. Demonstrated skill in data analysis, including judgment of quality and identification of sources of error. Demonstrated skill in working with a range of technical, administrative, and scientific personnel. Able to go to sea. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to meet and maintain US Department of Commerce (DOC), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) security requirements for working in a federal facility, which includes being fingerprinted and having a federal background check performed prior to date of hire and maintained throughout duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to obtain NOAA Medical Clearance for embarking/working on NOAA vessels or other appropriate vessels which includes providing proof of required immunizations and/or obtaining the necessary immunizations as required by NOAA Marine and Aviation Operations. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Strong knowledge of theoretical and observational physical oceanography and/or meteorology. Experience with ocean current measuring devices and datasets. Experience with ocean acoustic instrumentation. Experience working at sea on oceanographic research ships. Experience in Linux system installation and administration. Working knowledge of standard serial communications hardware and software protocols. Working knowledge of computer networking protocols, methods, and tools. Strong knowledge of web programming tools including javascript and CSS. Strong knowledge of event-based Python GUI programming.
