Description:
As an AmeriCorps Discovery Fellow, you'll bring innovative science education to an entire community, creating the next generation of science and conservation leaders. Our team of seven Fellows are dedicated to providing opportunities and mentoring kids in poverty, helping them develop a passion for science and conservation, stay in school, go to college, become scientists, and gain entry to fields where they make a difference. Beyond the deep level of satisfaction gained through service, you will also gain the skills to prepare for future success in an education, science, or conservation field upon completion of service. Over time you will increase your impact with improved skills and grow your leadership through mentorship, increased programmatic responsibilities, and receive resources to support your individual career readiness plan for post service. You will have training and experiences proven to improve project management, leadership, and communication skills while creating an individual growth plan to support your career path Upon completion of the fellowship you will be prepared to transition into graduate school or the next stage of your career path as a well-rounded professional with the experience, skills, and expertise needed to succeed. Responsibilities/Deliverables: • Provide direct hands-on instruction, teaching STEM and conservation concepts in the classroom and field, to elementary and middle school students from an underserved community up to 30 hours a week. • Assist with program evaluation and development. • Assist in program coordination such as supply management, curriculum development, student management, student support, scheduling, and volunteer management. • Assist in developing program management systems (e.g., create protocols, spreadsheets). • Engage volunteers in order to generate ideas, facilitate needed activities, and strengthen relationships. • Because of the organization's size and nature, other duties may be required on ad hoc basis (e.g. special event support).
Requirements:
• Highly proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint. • Pass a fingerprinting / background check. • Have reliable transportation, valid Driver's License, vehicle insurance, and clean driving record. • College graduate with a bachelor's degree in a related field. Qualifications: • Passion for, commitment to, and understanding of AmeriCorps mission and volunteer service. • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the community we serve, such as: o Graduating from our programs, o Living in the community of City Heights, or o Living in or from a community similar to City Heights. • Science education experience, with a strong understanding of the scientific/research process. • Ability to work as part of team in a fast paced, dynamic work environment. • Interested in gaining science teaching and communication experience for future career path. Qualifications: • Passion for, commitment to, and understanding of AmeriCorps mission and volunteer service. • Demonstrate a deep understanding of the community we serve, such as: o Graduating from our programs, o Living in the community of City Heights, or o Living in or from a community similar to City Heights. • Science education experience, with a strong understanding of the scientific/research process. • Ability to work as part of team in a fast paced, dynamic work environment. • Interested in gaining science teaching and communication experience for future career path. Desired Skills: • Fluent in Spanish; proficient written and verbal communication skills. • Health conscious and excellent physical condition to work in outdoor and remote locations. • Strong swimming ability.
