Description:
Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST), Simons Collaboration on Ocean Processes and Ecology (SCOPE), located at the University of Hawai‘i (UH) Marine Expeditionary Center (Pier 35), the UH Manoa, and various research vessels at sea, in Honolulu, Hawai’i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.

DUTIES:
Responsible for a wide variety of oceanographic scientific sampling gear, both electronic and mechanical sampling systems, platforms, and supports equipment used in field studies designed to understand the ocean microbial and biogeochemical environment. Oversees, deploys, recovers, maintains, and calibrates a broad spectrum of seagoing Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and environmental sampling devices, water enclosures, and field instrumentation in support of the Multiple Vehicle EcoGenomic Automated Sampler (MiVEGAS) - AUV program. Develops field procedures and strategies to integrate the use of novel environmental scientific instrumentation with these initiatives. Conducts deployments/recoveries of tethered instrumentation, free floating instrumentation, and autonomous vehicles (surface and subsurface). Provides maintenance and troubleshooting for field instrumentation and the various platforms, such as large water volume enclosures (e.g. mesocosms), autonomous vehicles, free floating ocean platforms, and mechanical delivery or handling systems. Troubleshoots a variety of systems involving electronic, mechanical, and computers. Designs and fabricates new electronic and mechanical equipment and systems as needed to meet the changing sampling and experimental requirements. Participates and coordinates with others to improve and enhances both the remote data acquisition platform efficiencies and to enhance the near real-time data presentation.
Requirements:
PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING: Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in physical/engineering science. EXPERIENCE: At least five (5) years of experience with installation, maintenance, operations of oceanographic scientific research involving mechanical equipment, research instruments, and support systems. Experience with deploying and retrieving instrumentation from the ocean. Experience troubleshooting computer systems (program and system level) and hardware (Linux operating system and others). Experience with data acquisition systems. Experience conducting field/shipboard experiments, often requiring physically demanding duty schedules. Experience designing, constructing, and integrating mechanical and electronic systems. Experience with Computer-aided design (CAD) software or other mechanical and electronic design tools. ABIL/KNOW/SKILLS: Working knowledge of electronics and electronic systems, including basic electronics skills and working knowledge in use of electronic test equipment for analog and digital electronic troubleshooting and design. Knowledge of sensors and data acquisition. Good working knowledge of mechanical systems, especially familiarity with mechanical and materials issues at sea. Working knowledge of and ability to work with synthetic lines and electro-mechanical wire ropes. Working knowledge of electronic test aids, such as multimeters, oscilloscopes, frequency generators. Mechanical skills and aptitude. Skills in use of hand and power tools. Skill to move from conception ideas to development to practical application. Must be able to use a Personal Computer (PCs) and possess demonstrated software programming ability. Must possess computer literacy in terms of computer programming (C, C++, Python, Java, or script languages such as Pacific Resources for Education and Learning (PERL), Matix Laboratory (MATLAB), and Awk). Ability to modify computer programs. Able to troubleshoot mechanical failures, computers, or instrumentation using various mechanical tools, electronic test equipment or computer systems. Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain throughout duration of employment. PHYSICAL/MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to work effectively at sea, sometimes under adverse conditions. SECONDARY QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience with mechanical systems handling large water volumes, robotics, and setting up maintenance facilities and science labs.
