Description:
Integrated Statistics is looking for a physical science technician to work with the Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center (WHCMSC) Seafloor Mapping group, which works closely with staff scientists to design, organize, and operate complex marine geophysical research programs.
The physical science technician supports operational, engineering, mechanical, and technical aspects of the WHCMSC research programs, taking responsibility for the maintenance, organization, and operation of all geophysical research equipment, navigation systems, data acquisition systems, and operation and maintenance of small research vessels. As an electronics and marine technician supporting marine research programs, the technician position requires organization and planning, equipment preparation and active participation in mobilizing and conducting field activities, with a direct and critical impact on the success of research programs.
Duties
The physical science technician's duties include but are not limited to: testing, maintaining, and operating a range of geophysical instruments, for example: sidescan-sonar swath bathymetry seismic profilers navigational systems such as DPGS, RTK-DGPS mobilizing, maintaining and operating a wide range of instrumentation during ship-board operations, including: geophysical instruments mechanical winch systems sediment sampling video and photographic systems maintaining and operating small research vessels. The technician is expected to spend at least three months at sea. Requirements:
Education: Associate's Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent work experience.
Experience/Skills: The technician must have knowledge and familiarity with: Electronics and computerized geophysical data collection systems; Electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes, multi-meters, filters and oscillators used to maintain, operate and troubleshoot instrumentation; Geophysical data collection principles and troubleshooting techniques; Mechanical hand and basic machine tools such as drill presses and band saw used to repair equipment and/or fabricate support devices; Computer operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Macintosh OS.
Additional Skills and Abilities In addition, the technician must have: Ability to work well within a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technicians. Ability to enjoy/tolerate laboratory, warehouse and field environments where the employee is often subjected to long periods of standing, stooping, lifting heavy items and reaching. Coordination, good health, strength and balance, since a significant part of the work is conducted onboard a research vessel and working at dockside. Ability to tolerate an environment of extreme noise, fumes, and exposure to harsh weather and sea conditions for up to three months of each year while on board a research vessel.
