ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: | |||||||
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • Conduct on-site, and offsite, educational programs, for school and public audiences, adhering to program goals, curriculum and quality customer service standards as outlined by department and/or Aquarium procedures. • Assist with program/project logistics, such as schedules, planning, implementation and organization. • Assist Coordinators and Managers with onsite curriculum development and program evaluation. • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals. • Use best practice teaching strategies that incorporate audience inclusiveness, inquiry and science content accuracy. • Properly use and maintain teaching resources and equipment, including field, lab and classroom materials. • Assist with other educational and aquarium programs/projects as needed, such as Shark Week and Special Events. • Properly handle and utilize live animals, adhering to established guidelines and protocol. • Provide leadership to others through example and sharing of knowledge and skills. • Provide exceptional guest service to both internal and external customers. • Comply with a safety policies, practices, and procedures. Report all unsafe work practices to supervisor and / or Human Resources. • Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals. • Perform other duties as assigned. • Abide by all policies and procedures outlined in the employee handbook. |

QUALIFICATIONS: | |
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED: • Demonstrated proficiency instructing and coordinating school- and public-based audiences, in both structured and unstructured settings. • Proven experience working with audiences of diverse ages, ethnicities, and educational backgrounds. • Experience planning, developing and implementing activities that utilize best practice teaching strategies, including audience inclusiveness, inquiry and science content accuracy. • Strong ability to communicate clearly and effectively with people of all ages in English, written and oral formats. • Knowledge of proper use and care of classroom-based scientific equipment. • Familiarity with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for science and/or Next Generation Science Standards. • Ability to work and teach in wide a variety of indoor and outdoor environments/settings. • Ability to work a variable and flexible schedule including evenings, weekends, holidays as required. • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Power Point, and related office software. • Proven experience effectively working as part of a collaborative team or independently. • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or government regulations. • Ability to write information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. • Demonstrated ability to make sound judgments and decisions, and function in a high-energy environment. • Knowledge of local marine habitats, flora and fauna. • Skill in boating, canoeing and swimming. • Ability to collect and handle marine specimens preferred • Ability to speak Spanish preferred • Vision Requirements: Ability to have close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), Color vision (ability to identified and distinguished colors), peripheral vision (Ability to observe an area that may be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point) |

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE • One or more years experience teaching in an informal science education institution or formal classroom. • Degree (BA, BS, AA or higher) in marine or related natural sciences or in education with science emphasis; or equivalent combination of education and experience. LICENSE / CERTIFICATION First Aid / AED / CPR Certification Valid TX Drivers license with an insurable record EQUIPMENT / MACHINERY / TOOLS / SOFTWARE USED Personal computer Cyber Train EWS Timekeeping Microsoft Office Projector Canoes / Kayaks Audio and Visual Equipment Science investigation equipment: microscope, pH testers, plankton nets, etc. WORKING CONDITIONS • Well lighted, heated and or air-conditioned indoor office setting with adequate ventilation but some aspects of the job are performed outdoors exposed to changing weather conditions (rain, sun, snow, wind, etc.) • Heavy physical activity performing strenuous daily activities of a primarily product / technical nature. • Manual dexterity sufficient to reach / handle items, works with fingers. • Work Schedule – Must be able to work a flexible schedule based on programming to include nights, weekends, and holidays as needed • Job can be performed in loud conditions (large crowds and equipment) • Occasional overnight travel by land or air – up to 20% |
