ArcticNet is a Network of Centres of Excellence of Canada that brings together scientists and managers in the natural, human health and social sciences with their partners in Inuit organizations, northern communities, government and industry to study the impacts and opportunities of climate change and globalization in the Arctic. Over 140 ArcticNet researchers and 1000 graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, research associates, technicians and specialists from 30 Canadian universities and numerous federal, provincial and regional departments collaborate on 38 research projects with more than 150 Canadian and foreign partner organizations. The research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen is ArcticNet's primary research platform for sampling the coastal Canadian Arctic. With sophisticated oceanographic equipment, the Amundsen conducts state-of-the-art research on sea ice dynamics, water chemistry and physics, optics, bathymetry, geology, biology and atmosphere-ocean exchange. JOB SUMMARY: Based on the science program developed by ArcticNet's researchers, the Ocean Instrumentation Professional will work under the supervision of the Marine Research Manager. The Ocean Instrumentation Professional's tasks are as follows: Development, installation, operation and maintenance of the CCGS Amundsen's oceanographic instruments: - Working in a team setting to develop, install, repair, calibrate and maintain various scientific instruments and systems before, during and after the annual CCGS Amundsen expedition; - Updating of the equipment inventory (keeping track of new equipment, maintenance and repair requirements). At-Sea Operations: - Mobilization and demobilization of oceanographic equipment for annual at-sea expedition; - Operation of the CTD-Rosette system; - Operation, maintenance and repair of the scientific instruments and systems necessary for the annual CCGS Amundsen expedition to the Canadian Arctic; - Training of internship students for installing, calibrating and maintaining various scientific instruments. Data Processing and Reporting: - With ArcticNet researchers, ensuring that the sampling campaign and protocols as well as data processing and outputs meet scientific requirements; - Preliminary data processing and quality control for oceanographic datasets; - Writing of operational reports for annual expeditions detailing data sampling procedures, equipment problems encountered and troubleshooting techniques applied, as well as description of data outputs.
Requirements:
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS: - Degree in ocean instrumentation or equivalent (e.g., ocean technology, oceanography, marine sciences, engineering related technologies); - Experience in maintaining, repairing, operating and installing oceanographic equipment; - Experience operating a CTD-Rosette system at sea; - Experience in the recovery, logging, and preliminary analysis of oceanographic data, or equivalent experience; - Excellent competencies in computer programming and interfacing with electronic equipment; - Competency in electronics; - Capacity to spend 6-12 weeks per year at sea in the Canadian Arctic; - Ability to work autonomously as well as in a dynamic team environment; - Willingness to live and work in Quebec City. ASSET QUALIFICATIONS: - Experience in the maintenance and repair of simple mechanical systems. Skilled in the use of hand tools, power tools and electronic test equipment (trade skills). - Good working knowledge of mechanics and hydraulics; - Good working ability in English (oral & written); - Willingness to learn basic French.
