Description:
Hurricane Island Foundation (www.hurricaneisland.net) is seeking a dynamic, hard
working, and self-directed Education Coordinator who is passionate about the mission and work of the Foundation. The Education Coordinator must have teaching experience, with a strong experiential education background and pedagogy. Certification, or eligibility for Maine Teacher Certification, in a science field is a requirement, as is a strong background in marine and/or environmental science and fieldwork.
The HIF Education Coordinator works with the HIF Executive Director, the Director of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership, Program Team, Board of Directors, and Program Committee to develop, oversee, direct, execute, and assess the curriculums, education programs, instruction, scheduling, and coordination of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership. This position is part of a team responsible for creating and carrying out the educational mission and operations of the Hurricane Island Center for Science and Leadership.
The HIF Education Coordinator must be outgoing, adventurous, collaborative, teamoriented,creative, and well organized, but also very hands-on in day-to-day operations. The Education Coordinator will be directly responsible for a seasonal staff of 3-6 program instructors and interns on Hurricane Island. In addition to the Executive Director and Board, this position will work closely with the HICSL Director and staff, Program Committee, HIF Science & Research Director, and Outreach Coordinator to develop and promote HIF/HICSL programs and recruit students, as well as seek out and develop Foundation and Corporate partnerships and pursue grant funding opportunities.
JOB-SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Willingness, flexibility, and enthusiasm to work on a remote Maine island for
extended periods (up to a week) during HICSL programs and to actively participate
in supervision and instruction of on-island programming.
2. Provide leadership, direction, and support to the HIF Executive Director, HICSL
Director, and appropriate Board members and committees, in the effective
operation of all HIF/HICSL programs.
3. In collaboration with Executive Director, HICSL Director, Outreach Coordinator, and
Board, develop and implement an annual Education Program Plan and Budget for
single and multi-year program development efforts.
4. Research and analyze corporate, foundation and individual donor bases and
recommend/execute solicitation strategies.5. In collaboration with the Executive Director, develop and implement a plan to ensure greater and sustained Maine student and educator participation in HIF/HICSL programs and scholarship awards
6. Coordinate scheduling and logistics for HIF/HICSL programs and activities in
collaboration with the HICSL Director and HIF Outreach Coordinator.
7. Ensure the evaluation of education programs and activities and identify
opportunities to improve results and to actively participate in supervision and instruction of on-island programming.
8. Supervise 3-6 seasonal staff and interns, and develop training materials for staff
orientation.
9. Identify and prioritize curriculum development and strategic partnerships with other Maine education programs.
10. All other duties as assigned.

Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
• A minimum of five years relevant work experience.
• Considerable knowledge of and experience with experiential science education and
field research.
• Demonstrated success with curriculum-writing and program design.
• Experience managing and supporting teachers and staff.
• Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written.
• Strong project management and organizational skills.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working
relationships with colleagues, staff, students, parents, board members, community
groups, and other related agencies.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
• Willingness and capability to live and work in an offshore Maine island environment
for extended periods of time.
• Ability to do field research and instruction in rugged terrain, the intertidal zone, and
on boats.
• Travel is required for work, as well as for outreach and events and other HIF
activities.
• Evening and weekend hours will be required during programs, outreach, and HIF
events.
