Description:
Special Activities at the NC Aquarium on Roanoke Island are hands-on programs with small groupsof participants, ranging in duration from one to several hours at a time. Such programs include butare not limited to: children’s summer camps (one-day and week-long), kayaking outings, crabbing classes, fishing activities, marine animal programs, behind the scenes tours, animal feeding programs, toddler programs, birthday parties, overnight programs, beach ecology trips, and salt marsh field trips. The Special Activities Instructors will both assist with these activities AND lead programs independently. Daily requirements of the instructor will include conducting programs and camps, teaching small groups of people of all ages, handling live animals, assembling education materials, driving a fifteen-passenger van with field trip participants, maintaining a 30-gallon aquarium tank, completing office duties, occasionally assisting with other daily program responsibilities inside the main public areas of the Aquarium, and other duties as assigned by the Special Activities Coordinator and Education Curator. Instructors will be trained to lead existing Aquarium programs; there will be limited opportunities for development of new curriculum.

Requirements:
Applicants should be articulate, enthusiastic, and have a strong work ethic. Candidates must either have a degree or be in pursuit of a degree in Biology, Marine Sciences, Natural Resources, Environmental Education, Parks and Rec, or a related field. If in pursuit of such a degree, applicants must have completed at least two years towards degree. Prior experience working with the public, strong presentation skills, adaptability to different teaching situations, a flexible schedule, and a valid driver’s license are all required. The following skills and/or current certifications are preferred: CPR, First Aid, Lifeguard Certification, Divemaster Certification, kayak experience, teaching experience, water safety skills, experience working with children, and a working knowledge of the Outer Banks flora and fauna. Candidates must be able to lift at least 50 pounds, and be able to spend extended periods of time outdoors. A background check is required.
