The School Programs Manager (SPM) is part of a dynamic team of STEM educators at the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego (BAS). The SPM oversees all facets of Birch Aquarium’s programs for K-12 school audiences, both onsite and offsite, as well as teacher professional development and other school-related programs. The SPM is responsible for infusing programs with Scripps Oceanography research and works to integrate informal and formal science education. The SPM reports to the Director of Programming and works closely with the Director of Scripps Educational Alliances and a STEM education-focused post-doctoral fellow to develop the portfolio of school programs offered by BAS. Responsible for curriculum and program design, implementation, and evaluation as well as recruiting and training educators/instructors, the SPM shares supervision of an Administrative Assistant, education specialists, and by-agreement instructors with the Public Programs Manager.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to: (1) ensuring delivery of high-quality, pedagogically sound, and scientifically accurate programming; (2) working with a team to develop programs and curriculum that are grounded in national standards and science literacy principles (e.g. NGSS; ocean literacy), the mission of the BAS, best practices in STEM education, and Scripps Oceanography research; (3) establishing and maintaining strategic relationships with teachers, science resource personnel, school administrators, school district science leads, the San Diego County Office of Education, and others to increase participation in Birch Aquarium’s school programs and broaden Birch Aquarium’s STEM education impact; (4) developing relationships with Scripps Oceanography faculty and researchers to support development of unique STEM education programs; (5) working with a STEM education post-doctoral scholar to recruit and train Scripps Oceanography graduate students as teaching assistants/mentors for school programs; (6) devising strategies to broaden the participation of underrepresented groups in BAS school programs; (7) participating in annual planning and ensuring school program planning is aligned with organizational priorities and strategic plan; (8) contributing to grant/project proposals for government, corporate, and private funding (9) overseeing program evaluation; (10) managing the compilation of program participation and financial data; (11) communicating the impact of Birch Aquarium’s school programs as requested; and (12) managing all program equipment, supplies and logistics, including the classrooms and outreach vehicles.
~~Schedule is Monday-Friday and may be flexed to accommodate holidays and/or special events, as needed. Must be able to work occasional evenings, weekends and travel to appropriate conferences.
~~Some programs involve outdoor activities and may require lifting tanks and equipment plus handling live organisms. Must be able to move materials, weighing up to 25–30 pound, with or without accommodations.
Requirements:

A Bachelor’s Degree in a Natural Science or in education with science specialization, with California Teaching Credential and a minimum of five years experience teaching science in an educational setting, either formal or informal; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience with, and demonstrated ability to navigate in, school/education culture.

Strong science content knowledge in earth, ocean and/or atmospheric science; expertise in understanding scientific language and research principles; experience with scientific culture and/or science research experience.

Demonstrated ability to design curriculum and conceptualize, develop, and evaluate educational programs.

Knowledge of current science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) initiatives and science standards/literacy principles: NGSS; earth, ocean, atmospheric and climate science literacy; and California’s Environmental Principles and Concepts

Experience in teacher professional development and training; substantial knowledge of pedagogy/best practices in STEM education.

Demonstrated ability to teach ocean and earth science to a wide range of audiences.

Experience developing and assessing science education programs that incorporate inquiry based activities and hands-on learning, and that emphasize learner-centered approaches.

Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards and their implementation and assessment in California schools.

Proven ability to manage program development, coordination and implementation, including tracking and maintaining a balanced budget, promoting and marketing programs, and providing regular progress reports.
