successful and productive careers, the MATE Center is defining marine
careers and the skill base of the Marine Technical Workforce. A description
of the Marine Economy forms the basis for understanding job requirements.
Information from Employers of marine technicians - commercial, government,
and academic - identifies employment trends. With this foundation, current
and future jobs are defined, and required skills detailed for specific
occupations (Occupational Guidelines). Necessary training requirements
are then developed and educational programs established to accomplish
the training. The process is only successful with the continuous input
from the marine industry - the commercial companies with immediate and
future needs to hire the best marine-trained employees to keep ahead in
the fast-paced exciting, competitive ocean environment.
