Launch of the Avon and Alvin swimmers on their way to recover the submersible. Alvin group members conduct pre-dive systems checks inside the submersible's hangar. The mighty Alvin emerges from its hangar on its way to dive number 3,488.
Alvin, with swimmers on top, as it's lowered into the water. Six-foot long blood-red tubeworms fill the view from Alvin's porthole. Eel-like zoarcid fish slither around tubeworm clusters and mussels beds within vent fields.
Jill Zande and MATE intern Diana Wellman watch as Alvin is placed on deck after its successful first dive of the expedition. Photo by Mike deGruy Larry Carpenter gets the traditional first-dive cold water dumping upon emerging from Alvin.
