Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) is a non-profit organization that promotes conservation of Florida's coastal ecosystems with a special focus on threatened and endangered sea turtles. The center features free admission and hosts 215,000 visitors each year that come from down the street, across the country and around the world. The visitor experience includes up-close interactions with threatened and endangered sea turtles, plus a variety of aquariums, exhibits and learning programs. Located adjacent to one of the most important sea turtle nesting beaches in the world, LMC is a state-of-the-art sea turtle hospital and research facility.
The Education Department is currently accepting college level interns to assist in environmental education programs and duties at LMC. Students interested in this program will be working under the Education Department and assisting in educational aspects of the center, including, but not limited to:
- Presenting LMC programming to K-12 school children, as well as college students and adults
- Conducting educational outreaches for K-12 students in Palm Beach County schools
- Conducting outreach, educational programs and/or information tables as appropriate for trade shows, festivals, LMC events, and community events
- Coordinating with Education team on the creation and implementation of components for iconic annual events
- Leading K-12 students on field trips and virtual field trips at LMC
- Developing education curriculum based on up-to-date Florida educational standards
- Completing an individual final project based on the intern’s career objectives
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements:
The goal of this internship is to introduce students to a career in marine conservation and environmental education. Through coordinating and leading public and academic programming, the intern will develop/hone public speaking and leadership skills while improving knowledge of local marine systems. Other skills developed through this program include critical thinking, problem solving, team building and cooperation, as well as curriculum development and implementation.
All interns must be currently enrolled university students (full or part time) pursuing a degree in a related discipline (i.e. marine science, environmental science, education) and the intern must commit to working 20 hours per week at LMC for 12 weeks during Summer 2014 (start/end dates are negotiable). All interns must also possess a valid driver’s license and be able to pass a criminal background check.
