The Shannon Point Marine Center invites applications for an innovative program designed to increase diversity within the next generation of marine scientists. Participants complete 31 quarter credit hours of formal university coursework (with credit transfer subject to approval of the home institution), explore career opportunities, develop career skills, attend a science conference, and engage in supervised research. Applications are encouraged in particular from U.S. citizens currently underrepresented in the marine sciences (i.e., African Americans, Latino/Hispanics, Alaskan Natives, Native Americans or Native Pacific Islanders.)
Selected students spend two quarters (January 6- June 12 with a March 21- March 30 spring break) at the Shannon Point Marine Center. After the program, participants retrun to their home institutions to complete their undergraduate programs.
Location:
The Shannon Point Marine Center is a facility of Western Washington University located in Anacortes, Washington approximately 45 miles from the main campus. SPMC offers access to marine and coastal environments typical of the Pacific Northwest, as well as the alpine environments of the Cascade Mountains and the Olympic Peninsula. The facility is 90 miles north of Seattle, Washington and equal distance south of Vancouver, British Columbia.
Financial Support:
Funding from the National Science Foundation covers all tuition and fees for two quarters, housing in the SPMC dormatory, one round trip from the participant's residence and SPMC and $3677 work-study allowance to help defray other costs during the durationof the program.

Applicants must be in an academic program leading to a bachelor's degree. A complete application includes and online form (http://www.wwu.edu/mimsup), a statement of the student's interests and goals, a transcript and letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the student's academic record.
