THE EDUCATION PROGRAM MISSION:
The mission of the Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area is “to preserve, protect,
and enhance the area’s cultural and natural heritage while providing a variety of
educational, interpretive, and recreational experiences for all visitors.”

on, hearts-on, and minds-on” engagement of the area’s resources.

GENERAL POSITION DUTIES:
Volunteer Resource Educators at Yaquina Head are part of the park’s Interpretation
Division. A typical day might include exploring tide pools with K-12 students,
describing the migration of gray whales, answering questions about the area at the
site’s Interpretive Center, greeting visitors at the Entrance Station, or assisting with
historical interpretation of Oregon’s tallest lighthouse.
DUTIES:
Approximately 4,000 Kindergarten through 12th grade students visit Yaquina Head
Outstanding Natural Area during April, May, and June each year. With the guidance
of the Education Coordinator, Volunteer Resource Educators will:
? Instruct grade-specific intertidal ecology programs for K-12 students
(adaptations, zonation, biodiversity).
? Assist with costumed living history programs.
? Assist in developing instructional materials including curriculum for on-site
programs and pre/post materials for classroom teachers.
? Provide information and informal interpretive services for the general public.
? Staff the Interpretive Center information desk and potentially perform fee
collection at the Entrance Station.
? Perform administrative tasks associated with the program and park
COMPENSATION:
(1) Free housing in a dormitory setting at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine
Science Center in Newport, Oregon.
(2) $200/week stipend from ‘Friends of Yaquina Lights’, a non-profit organization
dedicated to support the educational and interpretive services of Yaquina Head
Outstanding Natural Area.
(3) Professional training in environmental education, intertidal ecology, and other
natural and cultural history of the Oregon Coast.
WORK SCHEDULE:
Resource Educators work eight hours/day for five days/week including some holidays,
nights, and weekends.

Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
This position provides excellent career-oriented experience for anyone interested in
environmental education, resource education, and natural/historic interpretation.
Applicants must have:
? Demonstrated enthusiasm and interest for working with children, park visitors,
and natural and historic resources.
? Ability to regularly climb and descend the lighthouse stairs (114 steps) and
the steps (134) leading to Cobble Beach.
? Ability to walk safely on slippery, algae-covered rocks in the tide pool area.
? Capability to live in close quarters with co-workers.
? A personal vehicle for transportation to and from the housing area to Yaquina
Head – a distance of six miles.
? A valid driver’s license.
Successful applicants have been current college students and recent graduates with
degrees in the fields of education, interpretation, natural resources, parks and
recreation, and theater.
