At last a comprehensive textbook that combines the science and excitement of underwater exploration!
Each chapter features clear illustrations, relevant physical principles, examples from actual subsea explorations, and "how would you solve it" challenges. Complete plans for an inexpensive, easy-to-build shallow water ROV are also included. In addition, students work on designing a hypothetical concept vehicle (suggested depth rating of 300 feet) in conjunction with various chapter topics. The flexible approach of Introduction to Underwater Technology & Vehicle Design makes this text suitable for course work at the high school, college, or university level. A separate Teacher's Guide is also available. Content of the textbook addresses the MATE Center's industry-generated Knowledge and Skills Guidelines for marine technical occupations included in the book's appendix. The project's advisory board features educational, scientific, and industry representatives. Introduction to Underwater Technology & Vehicle Design is being developed for the MATE Center by Harry Bohm and Vickie Jensen, co-authors of How to Build Your Own Underwater Robot and Other Wet Projects. Bohm also worked with Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) instructor Frank Barrows to develop the curriculum for MATE's Introduction to Submersible Technology course, taught at MPC. Both text and teacher's manual are scheduled for release in Summer 2001, and will be distributed to participants of MATE's 3rd Annual Summer Institute for Faculty Development.
