Name: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Description:

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory's Center for Science and Engineering Education offers research fellowships to undergraduate students. The Energy Research Undergraduate Laboratory Fellowship (ERULF) is one of the largest programs for undergraduates at Berkeley Lab. The ERULF program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy and is open to any undergraduate student who is a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident, at least 18 years of age, and enrolled in an accredited U.S. College or University.
It is for students in any scientific or engineering discipline. This program places students in paid internships in Science and Engineering.
Students work with scientists or engineers on projects
related to the laboratory's research programs.

The DOE also sponsors the Community College Institute that places students from community colleges in paid internships in science and engineering and technology at LBNL during the summer. Because of the comprehensive nature of this program many of the participants have felt it has had an enormous influence on their careers. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also attend career planning and numerous training/informational sessions
Undergraduate research fellows will be associated with members of the scientific staff for 10 weeks in a program designed to provide research experience in various areas of physics, chemistry, nuclear science, engineering, materials science, biology, computer science, and environmental studies. All fellows will be expected to attend (mostly
weekly) lectures or seminars in various science issues and topics during the course of the program and to prepare a technical poster, research paper or presentation at the completion of their research.
The program has sessions throughout the year. The fellowship provides a stipend of $400/week. A housing allowance of up to $75/week is also available and round trip travel to and from the Laboratory will be provided for participants whose school and residence is more than 50 miles from Berkeley.

Information on the specific requirements and on-line application can be found on the DOE's ERULF web page:
http://www.scied.science.doe.gov/scied/ERULF/about.html.
It is important that the DOE/ERULF page be checked for current deadlines and opportunities.
