Salary Range: $10.00 per hour; 24 hours per week: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Position Description:
Assists with a variety of summer activities aimed at increasing public awareness about the ocean and the preservation of its resources and promoting the centers aquaculture and marine science programs. The intern will assist with the routine maintenance and daily activities of the center, assist with field-based marine science camps for children and adults, and will help organize and represent HGLC at several community fairs, lectures, and public events throughout the summer. Work performed under limited supervision. The position is from June 1, 2010 until August 20, 2010.
Responsibilities:
Assist with maintenance of HGLCs live animal collections and aquaculture systems.
Coordinate youth volunteers for system maintenance and summer camp.
Assist summer camp instructors with day-long programs for children ages 5-13 as needed,
Assist with administrative duties of summer camp, such as registration, financial management and
maintaining supplies
Maintain visibility and strengthen the image of the Herring Gut Learning Center by promoting HGLC's
programs through various community relation activities such as providing tours of the facility and
participation in outreach at fairs and other community events.
Necessary Skills:
Pursuing degree in environmental education/marine biology or a related field; or equivalent training
and knowledge, preferably with teaching experience.
Experience working with children.
Comfortable speaking in front of groups of both children and adults.
Sincere concern for the environment.
Strong writing, organizational, problem solving, teaching, and computer skills.
Willingness to work irregular hours and several weekends during the summer.
Ability to work effectively both independently and as a team player.
Valid drivers license
Ability to work outside and perform basic maintenance tasks that require lifting.
