Job Description:

Background: CanVis is a product originally developed by the USDA National Agroforestry Center as a free image editing program developed specifically for creating natural resource planning simulations. The NOAA Coastal Services Center (CSC) discovered this tool and has been slowly developing training materials, delivering workshops, and providing technical assistance to customers. This tool is currently the most requested item in the CSC clearinghouse and is now included in the Coastal Community Planning and Development course. Additional staff resources will help to address existing requests and fully develop training, materials and resources that will make it easier to maintain the requests for information.

The selected candidate will develop the CanVis Program components, outreach plan, training, and documents to allow the software to serve a larger audience and meet growing demand. Elements include:

• Inventory management: ensure requests for the software are fulfilled
• Updating and maintaining the Website: process software and training requests received through the web
• Presentations, workshops, and training: deliver introductory presentations (1 hour) to interested audiences; provide technical support for monthly web-ex workshop participants; provide individual one-on-one or small special request training either in person or over the web
• Technical assistance: provide technical assistance to customers who make decisions in permitting and planning; provide assistance for custom requests for creation of objects or visualizations; database of names is kept up-to-date; past workshop participants are engaged and provided support
• Marketing and outreach: develop outreach materials including outreach plan; assist with creating and distributing newsletter
• Performance measurement and customer satisfaction tracking: develop evaluation measures to assess performance and gauge impact of product to help make decisions; communicate regularly with customers to ensure satisfaction with product and possibilities for next generation CanVis

Required Skills:

• Background in regional, rural or urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, coastal zone management is desired.
• Photography skills required
• Excellent written and oral communication skills required
• Excellent customer service and organizational skills required
• Understanding of land use changes, development pressures and trends, coastal management issues desired
• Graphic software skills (Adobe Photoshop/Elements) desired

Education:

• BS degree in urban planning, landscape architecture, coastal planning, coastal zone management, or related field.
