GOING TO EXTREMES: Hidden Depths PBS Show: (Running Time: 9:04)
Bioluminescent fish, gelatinous sea creatures 120 feet long, archaic cephalopods and other strange organisms are among the new species discovered by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) in the midwaters of the Pacific Ocean near the California coast. This region of the ocean presents an exciting and challenging realm to explore. Join FRONTIERS as the crew accompanies the ROV Ventana on a fascinating journey to the middle depths to this unexplored ocean canyon. Also, Classroom Training Guides for Science Curriculum Ideas, link to TECHNOLOGY: Submersibles.

Journey to the Bottom of the Sea. Riverdeep Today recently interviewed Dr. Robert Ballard to learn about his upcoming expedition and his thoughts on exploration, education, and the JASON Project. A report on Ballard's JASON Project: 5 million children have accompanied his missions to the depths of the world's waters to experience the thrill of underwater exploration. Ballard notes that about 750,000 school children participated in "Going to Extremes." Of those," a majority were girls (53%), 14% Hispanics, and 12% African-Americans," proving, he adds, "that anyone can play in this sport". The JASON Project is changing attitudes about science.
