We are seeking an outgoing, service-oriented person with a passion for the fisheries of Maine and for education in coastal communities of eastern Maine for a new position of Fisheries Education Specialist. The successful candidate will jump at working with fishermen and the 8+ schools who are part of the innovative Eastern Maine Skippers Program (EMSP) in Hancock and Washington Counties and the Knox County islands. Responsibilities include staying current on fisheries issues that affect these communities; being present in and building relationships with fishermen, parents, and shoreside fishing businesses in all the schools’ communities, working with EMSP curriculum developers to provide relevant fisheries knowledge for curriculum based on current fisheries issues in three areas: the “At the Table” (the skills for co-management including biology, ecology, and civics) On the Water (including safety), and In the Office (business skills). During the school year, the job involves connecting the curriculum and the teachers to appropriate fisheries experts of all sorts, including fishermen who can provide hands-on learning experiences during the school year.
The Fisheries Education Specialist will be a full time employee of Penobscot East Resource Center(http://www.penobscoteast.org), a 13-year old non-profit organization located in Stonington, Maine. The work will be predominantly in support of Eastern Maine Skippers Program, a collaboration of educators, Rural Aspirations Project and Penobscot East. The FES will be a member of and work collaboratively with Penobscot East’s program staff as well as the EMSP partners. The successful candidate will have fisheries experience and a passion for educating the next generation of fishermen and coastal residents.

Requirements:
Some education experience is good but not essential. Experience in fisheries or a graduate degree in marine and/or social science and community organizing is desired. Must be both highly collaborative and a self-starter; must be computer literate, very organized, and love being a connector. A sense of humor and creative problem solving skills are advisable. The job requires extensive Maine travel and evening meetings.
Salary commensurate with experience. Position located in eastern Maine; not required to live in Stonington.
