The Division of Graduate Education (DGE) announces a Nationwide search for two Program Directors at the National Science Foundation with expertise in research, research administration, and/or graduate education administration experience. Also desirable are candidates who are highly knowledgeable in the field of graduate education, participate actively in the science and engineering community, have strong teamwork and collaborative skills, excellent oral and written communication skills, and are effective spokespersons in the science and engineering community.
The programs in DGE promote the early career development of scientists and engineers by providing fellowships, scholarships and traineeships for graduate study; the division also supports research on STEM workforce development and innovative methods for graduate education. All programs encourage the integration of research and education and seek to ensure a steady flow of diverse, high-ability graduates in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) to the nation.

Duties
NSF Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure NSF-funded research and development activities are at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge. In support of that, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interaction with academic research communities, formal and informal education organizations, industry, as well as interaction with other Federal agencies that may lead to development of interagency collaborations. Within this context, Program Directors solicit, receive and review research and education proposals, make funding recommendations, administer awards and undertake interaction with research communities in these fields. They are also responsible for service to Foundation-wide activities and initiatives that together accomplish NSF's strategic goals to 1.) Transform the Frontiers of Science and Engineering, 2.) Stimulate Innovation and Address Societal Needs through Research and Education, and 3.) Excel as a Federal Science Agency. The position requires a commitment to high standards of intellectualism and ethical conduct, a considerable breadth of interest, receptivity to new ideas, strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and high degree of personal integrity.
The program officer provides sound professional judgment based on experience in education program management, administration and evaluation, and S&E teaching and research. He or she must be able to apply scientific knowledge of sufficient breadth to evaluate applications in a wide range of scientific disciplines. The program officer must also be sufficiently knowledgeable about S&E graduate education to participate in planning new program initiatives in graduate education. He or she must also possess sufficient knowledge of and sensitivity to issues related to diversity in graduate education to guide the development and implementation of activities that help ensure a diverse and highly qualified applicant and awardee pool.
Responsibilities of the program officer include, for example, long-range planning and budget development for the areas of science represented by the program or program cluster, the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, the preparation of press releases, feature articles and materials describing advances in the research supported, maintenance and analysis of program data related to accountability and trends in S&E, and coordination and liaison with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations.

Qualifications
Candidates must have a Ph.D. or Ed.D. or equivalent experience in science, engineering or related fields plus, after award of the doctorate, six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or graduate education administration experience.
This position is outside the competitive civil service.
The individual selected must be able to interact on a peer basis with senior scientific and managerial personnel throughout NSF, other Federal agencies, academia, and the private sector. The ability to build bridges with the NSF Directorates is a necessity in order to help coordinate education efforts.
