This is an advanced level teaching position responsible for supervising educational efforts for pre-college classes and college classes.
An employee allocated to this position is required to give lectures on complex and difficult marine science phenomena, to develop and supervise field trips to diverse coastal environments typical of the North Carolina coast, to prepare written and visual materials for use by students, to initiate student-driven marine research projects, and to coordinate instructional field studies with University of North Carolina Wilmington and Cape Fear Community College Marine Technology professors.
This level of work requires leadership, initiative, creativity, and adhere to the expectations outlined in the “Memo of Understanding” with UNCW and CFCC. In addition to regular class time field research this employee is expected to supervise students on numerous field trips extending beyond the school day including: Marine Lab Key Largo, Everglades National Park, Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, Masonboro Island, Zeke’s Island, and Gulf Stream Offshore Excursion.
Requirements:
Job Qualifications
-Master’s degree from an accredited college or university
-Marine science education experience (formal or informal, minimum 3 years)
-Strong command of college level oceanography and marine biology
-Effective instructional delivery techniques and excellent communication skills
-Adherence to the requirements of the Code of Ethics for the education profession
-Strong command of marine aquarium science and management
-Commercial driver’s license with passenger and school bus safety certification
-Minimum “Open Water” SCUBA certification, suggested “Dive Safety” certification
-Competent kayak and canoe skills
-Competent and able to provide instruction in the scientific use of the following field research equipment: CTD, Ponar grab, secchi disc, Niskin bottle, and refractometer
-Competent to supervise students and perform field research data collection aboard an ocean research vessel
-Red Cross Standard First Aid certification
-Red Cross Standard Adult CPR certification
Additional Considerations
-Manage $20,000 budget in adherence to New Hanover County Schools financial practices.
-Hire and process independent contractor services with UNCW graduate students
-Coordinate with UNCW’s safety officer to gain access to seawater resources in order to manage 500+ gallons of marine aquariums
-Promote program during spring semester course election cycle
-Attend and present program description at all area high schools
-Distribute and collect Marine Science Academy applications
-Meet with UNCW personnel in order to select students for the program
-Distribute and collect UNCW/Marine Quest release forms to students
-Attend and supervise week-long CAMP OCEANS camp which occurs the week prior to the start of school
-Schedule and coordinate sack lunches for CAMP OCEANS with NHCS Child Nutrition Services
-Set up open purchase orders with vendors to provide fresh seafood for marine aquarium animals and laboratory specimens
-Pick up fresh seafood 2-3 times per week for marine aquarium animals
