Requirements:
BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide technical support for science missions at sea. Plan, supervise and participate in deck science operations. Operate, calibrate, maintain, and troubleshoot various types of scientific instrumentation and shipboard computers and networks. Ensure integrity of scientific data collection systems and the safekeeping of collected data.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participate in oceanographic research cruises of up to 35 days duration aboard URIresearch vessels or other vessels as assigned for up to 120 days per year.
Operate, maintain and troubleshoot equipment such as CTDs, water samplers, sonars, winches, oceanographic cable, satellite communication systems and navigation systems.
Maintain and troubleshoot computers and computer networks. Ensure accuracy, integrity and backup of collected data.
While at sea, serve as the science party interface with the ship’s crew. Plan and supervise science operations on deck. Assist science party in use of shipboard equipment.
Supervise and follow proper protocols for use and storage of hazardous materials.
Write documentation and reports.
When ashore, perform preventative and corrective maintenance as assigned.
Occasionally work on weekends or after hours to prepare for sea-going operations.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Must possess (or be capable of obtaining) and maintain a valid driver’s license, U.S. passport, and Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC). Must have (or be capable of obtaining) certification to operate forklifts.
REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree in engineering or science with a minimum of three years of experience OR Post-secondary computer/electronics training with five years of seagoing marine technician work experience.
2. Demonstrated experience in the operation of computer systems and computer networks.
3. Demonstrated experience with personal computer literacy.
4. Demonstrated evidence of physical capability to work on board ship for eight to twelve hour shifts for the entire length of a cruise.
5. Demonstrated ability to go to sea for up to 35 days at a time.
6. Demonstrated ability to perform physical work on deck in severe and inclement weather.
7. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
8. Demonstrated proficiency with written communication skills.
9. Demonstrated experience working in a close-quarters work environment.
10. Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
11. Demonstrated willingness to work flexible hours as required to support mission requirements.
12. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.
PREFERRED:
1. Demonstrated experience supporting science operations at sea, (including troubleshooting oceanographic instrumentation or marine electronics).
2. Demonstrated training or experience in electronics repair or design, acoustics and data analysis.
3. Demonstrated experience in carpentry and plumbing.
4. Demonstrated experience in machine shop and mechanical repair.
5. Demonstrated experience in seamanship and navigation.
