Description:
The Marine Technician Superintendent supports the research portion of the University mission as the Superintendent of the Marine Technician support group in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS). The Marine Technician Group is a critical component of CEOAS's operations function, providing the installation, maintenance, and operational expertise for sea-going scientific equipment, including all the electronic, communications, and sampling gear used by scientists on Research Vessel (R/V) Oceanus for the Ship-based Science Technical Support in the Arctic (STARC) and when OSU equipment is used on other research vessels. This position is manager of the STARC support for the Office of Polar Programs (OPP) on United States Coast Guard Arctic Ice Breakers and also supports CEOAS Ship Operations Management team.
Requirements:
Bachelor of Science in a Oceanography, Engineering, or related scientific or technical field. Experience in scientific operations at sea, including over-the-side operations. Experience in the coordination of technical work and technician activities. Electronic and mechanical skills and aptitude. Knowledge of and experience with commonly used oceanographic instrumentation and shipboard equipment. Computer literacy (Windows or Mac or UNIX), and familiarity with commonly-used desktop applications. Ability to deal with diverse groups of scientists and research staff off and onboard ship. Ability and willingness to work aloft and in confined spaces, and spend up to 90 days or more per year at sea on vessels of a variety of sizes owned by national and international entities.
