The successful candidate will provide a range of field, instrumentation, and data processing support to a multidisciplinary research program that addresses key issues in coastal sediment transport.
When supporting field operations for sediment transport studies, the candidate will:
- Execute field experiments to acquire geologic and oceanographic data for estuarine, near shore, and coastal ocean circulation sediment dynamics studies, lead others in the Work may include extended periods of travel, including aboard ship, small boat, and SCUBA diving
- Maintain, prepare, repair, fabricate, assemble, calibrate and test for long term deployment a variety of oceanographic equipment and equipment systems
- Download, document and archive observational data
When processing oceanographic time series data, the candidate will:
- Evaluate and edit data to ensure data and metadata integrity; process data for analysis, display, archive, and testing of
- Test, evaluate, and adapt protocols and documentation for operation and examination of data quality for new geologic and oceanographic
- Adapt code for data processing and evaluation where
From time to time, in house adaptation of commercial equipment is required to accomplish scientific objectives. The candidate will design, fabricate and test in house modifications to oceanographic sensors, data loggers and instrument platforms.
Requirements:
Work will require preparation and maintenance of oceanographic equipment and data. The incumbent shall have:
- Training, knowledge and/or coursework in one or more areas of geology, physical oceanography, or ocean
- Skill in electronic and electrical diagnostic and repair techniques: ability to use test equipment such as an oscilloscope, read electrical schematics, perform board level diagnostics, soldering, and component Ability to combine existing sensors and electronic systems in new ways to address new requirements.
- Skill with mechanical fabrication and operation of shop equipment, including carpentry and metal work. Able to read and work from a mechanical design schematic.
Experience at maintaining, programming, and deploying oceanographic equipment. Experience downloading, assessment, archiving, and processing of oceanographic data.
Field work will often be physical and under difficult conditions aboard ships or small boats. Minimum requirements are:
- Walk and stand on steel decks for hours. Walk or stand on slippery, uneven and/or moving surfaces.
- Carry a survival suit weighing < 15 lbs. up and down stairs. Don a survival suit in under 1 minute.
- Hear alarms (hearing aid permitted).
- Descend/ascend a rope ladder with rigid rungs a distance of 10 feet.
- Pass a SCUBA physical.
- Tolerate confined spaces for long periods of time, such as small bunk areas, cabins and compartments aboard a ship.
- Operate a small boat without getting seasick or without requiring medication that impairs judgment.
Other experience and certifications required are:
- Must have a valid driver's license. Must be able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Must qualify to, or be capable of learning to: operate a forklift, small boat, machine shop equipment and to SCUBA dive. Must be able to pass a SCUBA physical.
- Knowledge and at least 5 years' experience in safely conducting studies at sea on small boats and large (greater than 26 feet) research vessels, such as sediment sampling, deployment and recovery of moorings, water-column sampling devices, and bottom-deployed oceanographic equipment.
