JOB SUMMARY:
Plans, develops, and directs Koshland Public Engagement Program in the fulfillment of its mission to inspire people to use science to solve problems. Evaluates results in order to continuously improve the program. Fundraiser and promoter of the program with external groups. Responsible for supervising staff and extended team of consultants. Oversees all programmatic and administrative aspects of the program.
Requirements:
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Manages an Advisory Board of 13-15 experts with experience in a wide range of public engagement approaches and ensures their active participation in the program. Works closely with the chair of the Advisory Board to identify subcommittees to guide program content development, fundraising, and evaluation.
2. Develops a strategic plan for the program. Identifies objectives, priorities, management strategies, schedules, project milestones, and fundraising needs, guided by Pathways to Public Engagement (NAS, 2016) and the Advisory Board.
3. Creates sophisticated programs across multiple disciplines based on established design criteria. Ensures implementation of best practices in public engagement programs and adherence to program’s evolving logic model. Works with external evaluator to ensure program outcomes are achieved.
4. Designs complementary on-site, online, and off-site programming. Manages and selects core team members, establishes schedules, and identifies project staff leaders, consultants, and contractors.
5. Promotes and represents the program with various constituencies. Creates partnerships and ensures programming includes quality interaction with NAS members, the community, and groups identified as key constituents for the program. Cooperates with units of the NAS Executive Office and the National Academies on activities of mutual benefit. Connects to external networks of innovators in public engagement.
6. Develops and increases target audience of post-secondary students and life-long learners and their participation through creative use of multi-modal programming and marketing. Conducts audience research to inform and expand participation. Identifies current and emerging technologies and strategies for increasing audience participation.
7. Manages donor relations. Complies with requirements associated with the Marian E. Koshland Fund and acknowledges its support of programs. Fundraises for activities not supported by the Fund.
8. Ensures compliance with NAS and National Academies policies and procedures. Oversees the financial aspects of the program including development of an annual budget for approval by the NAS Council, periodic review of financial status, and reporting.
9. Directs the staff and activities of the program. Provides leadership and guidance. Mentors employees. Trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourages development of staff for future roles. Cultivates a work environment that fosters teamwork. Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies. Initiates personnel actions, including performance and compensation reviews and disciplinary actions.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Deep understanding of the theory and best practices of public engagement and adult learning through experience implementing multiple approaches and strategies. Proven track record of implementing highly effective public engagement programs, utilizing a range of approaches and outcomes, in collaboration with Advisory Board experts. Ability to strategically plan and creatively develop programs across multiple disciplines and multiple platforms. Ability to solve intellectual problems of substantial variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity. Ability to operate with substantial latitude for independent judgment and action. Experience working in complex environments with a high degree of organizational effectiveness. Ability to train and develop staff. Ability to work successfully in a team environment and to form and maintain effective teams. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees. Understanding of the National Academies’ mission and culture.
