Position Summary New England Science & Sailing Foundation’s nationally-recognized, award-winning ocean adventure education programs combine sailing and science for innovative STEM programming and partnerships leading to inclusiveness, experiential learning, personal growth, and stewardship of our community and environment. New England Science & Sailing Foundation (NESS) seeks sixteen AmeriCorps Adventure STEM Educators to join the national movement of 80,000 Americans who choose to serve in communities that need it most. Adventure STEM Educators will implement our AmeriCorps program, in partnership with the New London Public School District (NLPS). The Adventure STEM Educators will help impact young people’s lives by providing opportunities for transformational experiences and personal growth through integration of NESS’s STEM-based adventure education program with school curriculum. NESS SEA (STEM Education Ambassadors) AmeriCorps Members will become an integral part of the NLPS through a common vision of improved student performance and achievement. These full-time, 12-month AmeriCorps Adventure STEM Educators will help develop and implement NESS’s STEM-based ocean adventure education curriculum. This is a great opportunity for a passionate, motivated individual to be a part of a vibrant, growing organization while at the same time serving underserved students through the AmeriCorps national service model. Programs include both academic year and summer classes for students in Pre-K through Grade 12.
Requirements:
Duties and responsibilities: ? Commit to 12-month, full time assignment (30-40 hours/week), beginning August 2017 through July 2018. ? Must complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service. ? Undergo Pre-training at beginning of term, then regular training throughout service term. ? Serve in NLPS classes during the academic day providing classroom support, tutoring and mentoring. ? Create and develop STEM-based lesson plans aligned to state and national science standards. ? Teach summer and academic year programs as required, following NESS curriculum. ? Help implement NESS safety plan and maintain campus and offsite safety at all times. Serve as a team with other AmeriCorps Members, NLPS teachers and staff, NESS staff, NESS Program Director, and the AmeriCorps Manager to implement the program. ? Serve as role model for students: demonstrate stewardship & citizenship, model positive self-esteem & selfconfidence, practice growth mindset, communicate effectively ? Help students develop concepts and skills through real life experiences, organized around student questions. ? Help students develop skills in problem solving, communicating, data analysis and modeling, reasoning, reading closely and analytically, writing, public speaking, and researching. ? Collaborate with NLPS teachers to coordinate curricula and integrate field experiences ? Help recruit and work with volunteers from the community and encourage family involvement. ? Assist in maintaining inventory of program and watersport equipment and supplies, including routine maintenance on sailboats, fishing gear, masks & snorkels, wetsuits, boogie boards, etc. ? Assist in overseeing NESS aquariums, including keeping records of animals on site and performing routine maintenance.
