About the Wells Reserve at Laudholm:
The Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve is one of 29 protected areas throughout the nation dedicated to practicing and promoting coastal and estuarine stewardship through innovative research and education programs. The Reserves are a partnership between the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the coastal states. The Wells Reserve encompasses 2,250 acres along the southern coast of Maine. It has seven miles of trails that take visitors through diverse habitats, which are home to a variety of wildlife including several endangered species. The Visitor Center, offices, and laboratory are housed in a cluster of restored 19th -century farm buildings that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Laudholm Trust – the Wells Reserve’s non-profit partner – spearheaded the effort to save this historic site and create Maine’s only National Estuarine Research Reserve.
Position Description:
The Summer Camp Assistant will help to facilitate the environmental curriculum for summer day camps for children ages 6-15. Camps are offered as full-day and full-week options, with a full day running from 9am to 3pm. The Assistant will work alongside a camp coordinator to co-lead all summer camp programs, with up to 12 children at a time, in both an indoor and outdoor setting. Camps aim to foster stewardship and a sense of wonder outdoors with fun, dynamic, and engaging activities in salt marsh, beach, forest, and field habitats.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of two years completed towards an undergraduate degree in environmental education, education, environmental science, marine biology, biology, or a related field.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
- Teaching experience with a wide range of age levels in a variety of settings
- Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Upbeat, positive attitude and flexibility
- Knowledge of northeastern coastal ecosystems, especially salt marshes
- Strong work ethic
- Strong interpersonal skills
- Love of learning
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
Time Commitment:
A full-time 10-week commitment is required from June 11-August 17, 2018. Work days will be Monday through Friday, 8am to 4pm.
Compensation:
The compensation for this position is $11 per hour, plus free (and optional) housing at Alheim Commons, the Wells Reserve’s on-site dormitory.
