Boat Captain Seasonal Position • Virgin Islands • July 8th - August 7th Common Tides is looking for a USCG licensed Captain who has experience working 39 foot Catamarans or larger and a strong ability in teaching kids and working with adults. You must have proven leadership, sailing experience, and teaching skills. The Common Tides Boat Captain is responsible supporting an active, hands-on, experientially-oriented program. This includes physically demanding work, that may include kayaking, snorkeling, stand-up paddle boarding, fishing, and some heavy lifting. This is a high energy program where instructors spend long days working and teaching in a unique environment. Duties and Responsibilities: Oversee the safety of the vessel, crew, and passengers Navigation, anchorage, and docking Oversee the safe transport of visiting passengers to and from the vessel Work with the Common Tides Trip Directors to determine the best locations to travel to in order to support a safe, fun program Follow Common Tides curriculum both on and off the water Teach sailing, sail handling, and sail theory to volunteers and visiting students Conduct yourself in the highest standards by providing leadership and following conduct policies Oversee the weekly maintenance and routine safety inspections of the vessel Help implement Common Tides safety plan, maintain vessel and offsite safety at all times
Requirements:
Minimum Requirements: Current USCG 50 ton License or greater ARC Waterfront Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid preferred Proven ability to effectively manage and organize staff and students Strong communication, decision making, logistical, and organizational skills Must have a Valid Driver's License Able to pass a Government background check Must be in physical condition that allows for participation of all duties No conflicting commitments including travel, work or other leave of absence during program dates, July 8th - August 7th Experience sailing in the Virgin Islands is a plus BA or BS in Marine Science, Biology, Oceanography or a related science or Teacher Certification preferred Strong desire to change the world for the better through education and action!
