Data Engineer

Description:
The Ocean Exploration Trust (OET) is seeking a flexible generalist systems engineer to provide full-stack support of at-sea and on-shore oceanographic and ROV operations, on-shore development of new software and systems, and to participate in the design and stewardship of the OET science and outreach infrastructure.
The position involves exposure at all levels from physical networking to complex system design. This position is based in Narragansett, RI on the URI/GSO campus, with travel to the Nautilus as required.
Requirements:
Responsibilities
- Design and implement systems architectures (including COTS) necessary to support scientific and outreach operations
- Data Engineer on OET field programs for up to 16 weeks/yr (non-consecutive)
- Participate in developing technology strategy for OET and Nautilus
- Assist OET staff with basic IT and support ISC relationship
- Develop and maintain in-house software specific to the scientific and outreach goals of OET and Nautilus
- Other duties as needed and assigned
Qualifications & Skills Required:
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science/Engineering, or equivalent experience plus at least two to five years of applied experience Linux and network system administration
- Working knowledge of MacOS and Windows
- Ability to travel up to 16 weeks per year, non-consecutive (foreign & domestic)
- Resistance to seasickness
- Experience supporting live operations
- Excellent communication, multi-tasking, and time management skills
- Experience with software version control paradigms: svn, git, etc.
- Software engineering skills with an emphasis toward infrastructure and systems administration: bash, PERL, Python, javascript, C, java, web development
- Possess strong creative, analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
- Be a strong team player with a proactive attitude
- Demonstrate a willingness to roll up his/her sleeves and get work done
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a multidisciplinary team
- US citizen with current passport and no travel restrictions
- Valid drivers license
Preferred:
- Exposure to scientific data systems and data processing, network programming experience, satellite communications experience, sonar operation experience, TDD Experience
Work Environment
A mixture of sedentary office/IT work and active shipboard operations. May be required to service equipment in awkward spaces, lift packages and equipment around a working deck, up and down ladders.
Expected Hours of Work
Common office hours expected during shore-side periods. Shipboard work is nominally calculated at 10 hours per day, but Data Engineers are on-call 24/7 as necessary, often working alone. Ability to keep up with ship operational tempo required.
