Discovery Hall Programs (DHP) of the Dauphin Island Sea Lab has an opening for a marine science educator to work in a collaborative education and outreach group. This is a full-time, year round position with benefits. DHP educators develop and teach high quality on-site and off-site hands-on informal educational programs (field-based, in-class and distance learning) about marine and coastal issues to K-12 students, teachers and the general public during the school year and during the summer months. Off-site programs include overnight travel throughout the southeast as part of the BayMobile program as well as other outreach events. Educators may also work on grant-funded projects, develop curricula, participate in professional development activities, develop web content/tools, assist in our public aquarium, make presentations at national and state conferences, and assist in evaluations of DHP programs. Requirements:
Applicants must have a bachelor's degree in marine science, biology or related discipline or education. Individuals with an advanced degree in marine science or science education are preferred. Applicants must have some education experience, specifically formal or informal teaching experience. Individuals from groups underrepresented in marine science are particularly encouraged to apply. The applicant should be able to demonstrate excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication, as well as computer and organizational skills. Applicants should possess sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out the essential duties of the position and have or be able to obtain a valid AL Driver's License, CDL, 1st Aid, and CPR certification. A background check as well as a pre-employment drug test is required. Participation in DISL's ongoing drug-testing program is required. DISL is an EOE/AA/M/F/D employer. The ideal applicant should be reliable, flexible, team-oriented, enthusiastic, creative, innovative, positive-thinking, a self-starter, willing to get wet and muddy and have fun with K-12 students. They should be able to work with variety of audiences, abilities, backgrounds, ages and with all types of learners. They should have strong knowledge of marine science and environmental issues. The position requires participating in boat-based activities, lifting and carrying gear up to 30 pounds as well as the ability to swim and work outside year-round in Alabama weather (hot, cold, humid, windy, rainy, and very sunny). Work on some nights, weekends and holidays as well as occasional overnight travel is required. Application materials should specifically address how the applicant meets the above qualities.
