General Summary

The Education and Volunteer Program Coordinator (EVPC) will be focused on improving the quality of the Marine Science and Technology (MaST) Center's public programs by providing a compelling, immersive, hands-on learning experience and will inspire change in the way that people think, feel and act toward nature and build or enhance the connection the public has with the Salish Sea. This would include increasing the training and effectiveness of our 150+ volunteers as well as the development of curriculum directly tied to the MaST's strengths such as location, exhibits, and especially the construction of the new man-made reef. The MaST EVPC would typically work 5 days a week, regularly including Saturdays, enhancing the quality of programs and the safety of visitors, staff, volunteers, animals, and facility.
About the MaST:
The MaST Center fosters a culture of marine stewardship by engaging our community through interactive learning, personal relations and exploration.
The MaST Center is the marine laboratory for Highline College and is used for Highline and community classes, research, and other activities. The facility has approximately 3,500 gallons of flow-through aquariums and houses over 250 species of marine life from the Salish Sea. The MaST Center is open every Saturday to the public during its Discovery Days and hosts over 20,000 visitors annually. Once a month weekend programs also include the Science on the Sound, an environmentally focused speaker series and the Live Dive program where divers using a video camera and two-way communication take the public on an underwater tour of the Redondo dive site. During the rest of the week, the MaST Center is used for Highline classes, school groups, and other activities that support its mission.
Located in the Redondo neighbor of Des Moines, WA, the MaST Center is about 10 minutes south of the main campus and is halfway between Seattle and Tacoma. It is located on a 270ft pier that extends out into Poverty Bay. Redondo is one of the top dive sites in the entire Puget Sound and features one of seven Octopus Protection Areas in the state. Additionally, a significant man-made reef is planned to be built at Redondo in 2019. This man-made reef project is being done in partnership with the MaST and Washington SCUBA Alliance, a regional diver advocacy group.
