The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is searching for a Senior Engineering Assistant I/Engineer I to join their Deep Submergence Laboratory's team in the Applied Ocean Physics & Engineering Department to join their AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) team. This is a temporary position . not to exceed 08/30/2017. Exceptional individuals may be offered additional work after this period, depending on availability of funding. The Senior Engineering Assistant I (SEA I) level is a non-exempt position and the Engineer I level is an exempt position. The level of the position is based on the selected applicant's education and experience. Both levels are full-time and will be eligible for benefits. JOB SUMMARY: The Deep Submergence Laboratory's (DSL) mission is to further human understanding of the deep-sea floor by developing systems for remote, unmanned exploration. DSL engineers and scientists design and adapt state-of-the-art automatic control methodologies to specially designed remotely operated underwater vehicles for survey, close-up observations and sample gathering in some of the most remote and extreme regions of the oceans. Remotely operated and autonomous instrument packages are being designed for rapid, large-scale exploration. The latest development is the hybrid remotely operated / autonomous vehicle (HROV) Nereus which utilizes the combined technologies to explore depths to 11,000 meters. This is a software centric posting and while we are looking for engineers, there will be extremely limited opportunity for any form of hardware design or analysis at least in the first few years. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Work with the AUV Sentry team to develop software related to operations and data processing. Participate in at sea activities up to 120 day per year. Develop GUl's for AUV operations. Develop device drivers for AUV operations. Develop data post processing tools. NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Performs such other duties as the supervisor may deem necessary. DESIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Senior Engineering Assistant I Level: Considerable experience in specialized field (mechanical, aero, electrical preferred); consistently exceptional performance and a demonstrated record of reliable and timely task completion; invaluable long-term experience at the Institution coupled with technical support of the highest quality as a critical team member. Substantial extra-curricular or internship participation during education may be substituted for experience. Engineer I level: A BS degree in Engineering (mechanical, aero, electrical preferred) with minimal work experience. Both Levels: Prior experience with CIC++. Deep experience is not expected or required, but the successful candidate should be familiar with the basic concepts. Prior experience with data processing in python or Matlab. Prior experience with acoustic or other oceanographic data is desirable. Prior experience with GUI programming. Requirements:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift above the shoulder, shoulder to knee, knee to floor; lifting up to 50 lbs independently and up to 75 lbs with assistance. Carrying under 50 lbs. Visual requirements include depth perception, ability to see peripherally, ability to adjust vision to bring objects into focus, ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions, communicate effectively in loud areas (pier/dock, warehouse). Other physical tasks include occasional/prolonged standing/walking; manual dexterity and mobility, use of hands for basic/fine grasping/manipulation, and occasional reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling and crouching. Will be exposed to excessive cold, heat ,or humidity, dust or other irritants, grease and oils, hazardous substances or specimens, electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards, extended periods at sea, and prolonged work hours. Physical duties are subject to change. SEA DUTY CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTIONS: May work at least 8 hours per day and, at times in excess of 12 hours per day, 7 days per week. Sleep and work hours can deviate from those on land. May be expected to work on watch schedule (such as 8 hours on and 8 hours off or 12 hours on and 8 hours off) for all or part of a cruise or to work as hours are needed to accomplish the planned work. May need to travel during holidays and for long distances to and from foreign ports. May experience rudimentary living and working conditions, with shared and basic living quarters and laboratories. May experience bad or extreme weather conditions, including heavy seas, winter weather or hot, tropical weather. Work on deck may occur in both hot and cold conditions around the clock. Sea conditions will lead to active ship motion. Should be able to climb steep and vertical ladders and able to enter and exit compartments through hatches, doors, and sills. Should be able to carry heavy gear and participate in the loading and unloading of the ship as well as in the activities on deck and in the labs during the cruise. Shipboard environment may include: confined areas, shared sleeping quarters (berths) and bathroom facilities, small and basic berthing, fixed meal times and basic menus. Modest levels of heating, cooling, ventilation, and illumination, limited or no email and internet access and limited off-duty and recreational facilities (library, lounge, movies). May be exposed to potential allergens and irritants, including paint fumes. May experience constant and intermittent loud noises, and slippery and uneven surfaces.
