The Ocean-Bottom Seismology Laboratory of the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University is presently seeking a Marine Technician (Junior) to assist in the maintenance and operation of its fleet of 60 broadband ocean-bottom seismometers. Duties and responsibilities include:
- Assemble, refurbish, clean and maintain ocean-bottom seismometers and pressure gauges.
- Perform electrical and mechanical certification tests on ocean-bottom seismometers.
- Participate in research cruises: prepare and package instruments and equipment for shipment; deploy and recover instruments; and evaluate instrument condition.
- Assist in operation and maintenance of remotely-operated vehicle (ROV).
- Maintain laboratory tools and other equipment.
- Clean and organize laboratory and storage areas.
- Maintain instrument, equipment and component inventory.
- Provide general assistance to lab engineers for assembly and development projects.
Requirements:
Associate's degree in science or engineering or equivalent experience. Must be capable of working on ships at sea and in isolated locations for continuous periods of up to 2 months. Hands-on experience will include broad range of electronics with good theoretical capability leading to understanding of equipment function. Good soldering skills. Good command of written and spoken English. A maximum of 4 months total per year (up to 2 months continuous) of sea duty is required. Must be able to pass physicals for assignments to Antarctic research cruises and be able to lift 50 lbs. on a routine basis. Valid NYS driver's license required.
