Science Programs Coordinator
Sea Education Association (SEA) invites applications forthe position of Science Programs Coordinator. SEA is a non-profit educational institution located in Woods Hole, MA, which offers innovative and rigorous oceanography and environmental science programs on our campus and aboard our state-of-the-art sailing research vessels, SSV Corwith Cramer and SSV Robert C. Seamans in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
We are seeking a candidate who desires a diverse and challenging interdisciplinary position and understands what it takes to be an essential part of a team. Candidates should be professional, self-motivated and highly organized. Additionally, we require the flexibility to be able to meet the needs of our sailing school vessels which means occasional work during non-traditional work hours (nights and weekends). This is a full-time position and includes benefits.
Position Summary
The Science Programs Coordinator will play a vital role in supporting and promoting science programs on board SEA’s two sailing school vessels and at our campus. S/he will work alongside the Technical Science Coordinator, Marine Operations staff, as well as the Marine Science faculty to develop and advance the Assistant Scientist Program, ensure timely completion of pre-cruise and post-cruise logistics, and aid in support of marine science programs and overall ship operations. This position requires an individual to be able to multi-task effectively, be flexible and innovative, and possess good communication skills. The ability to work as part of a team is also essential to this position. The Science Programs Coordinator may also have the opportunity to sail as an assistant scientist or teaching assistant as needed. Travel to the ships during maintenance periods may also be required.
Reports to: Director of Marine Operations
Primary Responsibilities
· Lead the continued development and advancement of SEA’s Assistant Scientist Program. This will include including recruiting and placing assistant scientists on board SEA’s two vessels, coordinating training of current and prospective assistant scientists, and identifying opportunities for professional development.
· Obtain and manage clearances for scientific research and other related activities during at-sea programs. This will entail working closely with SEA faculty and other Marine Operations staff, in conjunction with the US State Department and coastal state authorities, to organize and submit research clearance applications, ensure the timely fulfillment of reporting requirements, and manage requests for data and other cruise-related info.
· Cultivate and maintain relationships with a variety of regulatory, governmental, and educational institutions and agencies
· Identify and represent SEA at various science-based educational and outreach events
Additional Responsibilities
· Works closely with the Technical Science Coordinator to:
o Maintain and troubleshoot oceanographic equipment and instruments
o Procure, stock, and deliver science supplies and equipment for the ships
o Manage the science operations budget and identify potential areas for additional funding opportunities (grants etc.)
o Manage the archiving of oceanographic data and samples
o Outfit and manage the shore-based laboratory
o Continually assess SEA’s shipboard science protocols for areas of improvement, including safety management
· Collaborate with other Marine Operations staff to:
o Ensure timely coordination of logistics for vessel arrivals and departures and as well as other at-sea activities
o Foster innovative approaches to communication between the vessels and shore-based faculty and staff
o Identify and coordinate professional development and training opportunities
· Other duties as assigned

Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications
· BS in Biology, Chemistry, Oceanography, or other related field
· 1-3 years of relevant experience in a professional setting
· Familiar with research vessel or sailing school vessel operations
· Proficient with word processing, spreadsheet and database software
· Excellent interpersonal skills, both verbal and written
· Demonstrated project management and organizational skills
· A demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with colleagues, staff, students and outside agencies.
Preferred Qualifications
· MS in Biology, Chemistry, Oceanography, or other related field
· Experience overseeing or managing staff and/or volunteers
· The ability to travel or go to sea for extended periods
· Working knowledge of oceanographic or marine science sampling methods
· Familiar with oceanographic sampling equipment
· Familiar with oceanographic sampling software (Ocean Data View, Sea Bird processing software, etc.)
