JOB DESCRIPTION
Coastal Studies for Girls, a residential science and leadership semester school in Freeport, Maine, is looking for a dynamic, progressive science teacher to join our experiential, place-based community that creates transformative learning for 10th grade girls. We seek an educator interested in taking advantage of the full potential of an interdisciplinary, residential science and leadership program on the coast of Maine that inspires girls to create joyful lives, vibrant communities, and a more connected world.
Primary responsibilities include designing and delivering the marine science course, Coastal Marine Ecosystems within an interdisciplinary Coastal Adventure curriculum that includes English, history and leadership. This course prepares students to conduct marine science research projects and present their findings in a capstone presentation. The Coastal Adventurecurriculum creates opportunities for extensive collaboration with other faculty members to weave skills in each discipline around shared themes. Specific responsibilities include leading student research projects, planning and leading field trips and other experiential activities, creating lesson plans, evaluating student work, maintaining class records, and maintaining the marine science lab
Secondary responsibilities include coordinating assigned extra-curricular program areas such as the guest lecture series. Teachers also work closely with Teaching/Residential Assistants (TRA’s) during class, field trips and extracurricular activities and are expected to offer informal mentoring and support for TRA learning goals. Responsibilities also include weekly student advisory meetings and student supervision one evening each week.
As the prime carriers of our educational philosophy and leadership model, teachers are expected to uphold the highest standards for themselves and their students, to serve as role model and mentor, to have a deep commitment to girls and girls’ education, and to embody the CSG mission and philosophy. A positive attitude is also paramount, along with a sense of humor and the ability to be flexible in an ever-changing environment. All faculty members are expected to participate fully in the CSG community and maintain an ongoing commitment to team effectiveness. As members of and models in our learning community, teachers are expected to pursue learning and growth opportunities in professional associations, conferences and classes.
Our science teacher has a pivotal role on the CSG team. As foundation of the CSG student experience, s/he is also the public face of the school as the leader of our rigorous, research-based science program, interacting with fellow scientists and the public to engage students in real science and to bring visibility to this exceptional aspect of our school.
