Application Deadline: 27-Mar-15
Description:
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is seeking a Datapresence Systems Engineer. This is a full-time 1.00 FTE, 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Dean.
The Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV) program is a National Science Foundation (NSF)-sponsored, Oregon State University (OSU)-led program to design and build up to three oceangoing vessels for the United States (U.S.) Academic Research Fleet. More information is available at:http://ceoas.oregonstate.edu/ships/rcrv/.
The RCRV Datapresence Systems Engineer will lead the design and implementation of the RCRV's permanent and portable scientific data systems, as well as post-delivery regional outfitting. The responsibilities include the management of datapresence, scientific and vessel data acquisition; and other science-related equipment across the RCRV class. Datapresence will enable virtual participation of at-sea research projects by shore-based researchers, students, and other stakeholders. The concept is to provide near real-time, processed, high quality ocean data from a wide variety of sources to users ashore via satellite communications using a high quality graphical user interface.
The ultimate goal of this position is to design, develop, and maintain a new and exciting interdisciplinary approach to ocean science research: one that enhances observational, experimental, and analytical capabilities through the use of datapresence. This position will travel to ship construction facilities to oversee the construction phase; and once construction is complete, will be required to periodically participate in research expeditions to ensure system performance. The Datapresence Systems Engineer will be responsible for working alongside scientists in the preparation of research expeditions, along with any troubleshooting during operations at sea.
The College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences is an internationally recognized leader in the study of the Earth as an integrated system. It operates numerous state-of-the art laboratories and two oceanographic research vessels, the 177-foot ocean-going Oceanus and the 54-foot coastal research vessel, Elakha. The College has an annual budget of more than $50 million, with support coming from the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, National Aeronautics and Space Administration and other federal agencies. It has more than 100 faculty, 200 graduate students and 600 undergraduate students. Graduate programs include Master's and PhD degrees in Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Geology; and Geography and a Master's degree in Marine Resource Management. The college has undergraduate programs in Earth Sciences and Environmental Sciences, with several minors and certificate programs.
Requirements:
Experience working with database development, data products, and database management.
Experience with software development projects; particularly data acquisition, display, and storage systems.
Knowledge of network design and components.
Experience with the use of data-related user interface systems and data visualization.
Willingness and ability to go to sea on a regional class research vessel for periods of up to two weeks.
Demonstrated problem solving skills, high motivation, excellent communication skills, ability to work independently or as part of a team.
Possess a valid passport, or be able to obtain one by first day on the job.
An appropriate IT security philosophy.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a Criminal History Check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have additional Criminal History Checks every 24 months.
