Module 14 - Sensor Devices

Goal:

This module will introduce the concepts of sensors connected to the ROV system.  A wide range of sensors are covered as they apply to ROV systems.

Objectives

Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:

  1. Calculate the viewing angle of a given camera lens once it is in water.
  2. Waterproof a temperature sensor that can be used as a tool package and collect temperature data with it mounted on an ROV
  3. Send Heading and temperature data to a HMI system
  4. Evaluate/Debate several environmental issues and discuss how ROV technology could help to collect evidence or monitor the sites discussed
Sections:
  1. Video Systems
    1. Cameras
      1. Camera Types
      2. Camera Sealing
      3. Connection Methods
      4. Video types
      5. Lens selection and image refraction in water
  2. Sensors
    1. Analog Sensors - Thermistor
    2. Digital Sensors - Compass
    3. Connecting to the Controller

  • Temperature vs. resistance characteristics of a thermistor
  • Potential dividers
  • Building a linear temperature sensor
  • Introduction to electricity
  • Linear approximation and calibration of the temperature sensor
  • Programming a calibrated temperature sensor
  • Building a distributed sensor network
