IMSG supports STAR in applied science research and development efforts in a semi-research and semi-operational working environment along with U.S. government scientists, visiting scientists, and other contractors. This task is to support the NUCAPS Sounding Team with specific focus on trace gas retrieval algorithms and codes.

Requirements:
General Requirements/Duties: This position will play the leading role to improve and maintain CO, CO2 and CH4 retrieval algorithms and codes. Responsibilities include to improve and maintain the retrieval algorithms for other trace gases such as SO2, HNO3, N2O. The research scientist will work with the sounding algorithm lead to implement new science and algorithms into the NUCAPS system. The research scientist will also work on atmospheric transmittance. He/She is also responsible to coordinate the validation data sets for NUCAPS trace gas products. Specific duties include but not limited to the following: ? Generate the first guess for NUCAPS trace gas products ? CrIS full spectral data channel selection and assessment ? Verify and improve the performance of NUCAPS trace gas products ? Integrate validation data for NUCAPS trace gas products ? Assist sounding team lead ? Work on scientific documentations and publications Qualifications: ? PhD or equivalent experience in atmospheric science and satellite remote sensing, in particular hyperspectral sounders ? In depth understanding of remote sounding theory ? Proven experience relevant to the NUCAPS algorithm and methodology, and the evolving NOAA unique capabilities using AIRS, IASI and CrIS sensor data. ? Demonstrated coding experience in C, C++, Fortran and IDL and/or MATLAB programming languages, with UNIX and/or Linux operating systems ? Sound oral and written communication skills ? Proven ability to work well in a team environment
